history

The Melbourne Renegades were founded in 2011 with the introduction of the Big Bash League . On April 6, 2011, they were presented along with the other teams in the league and assigned the color red . The Etihad Stadium was set as the home stadium. With Melbourne Stars there is a competitor in their own city that occupies Melbourne's test stadium , the Melbourne Cricket Ground . As Captain was Andrew McDonald appointed. As overseas players, they signed the Pakistanis Abdul Razzaq and Shahid Afridi . In the first season , the team was eliminated early in the preliminary round, and achieved seventh place with two wins from seven games.

For the new season, the team was heavily rebuilt. So you lost, among other things, Brad Hodge and Glenn Maxwell to the city rivals, and Shaun Tait and Andrew McDonald to the Adelaide Strikers . New signings included Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan , West Indie player Marlon Samuels and Pakistani Fawad Ahmed . The 2012/13 season was more successful than the previous one. You were able to secure first place in the preliminary round with seven wins in the event of a defeat and thus qualify for the semi-finals. There they met the Brisbane Heat , but lost against them with 15 runs.

Again the team was changed significantly in the run-up to the 2013/14 season . New signings included James Pattinson , Peter Siddle and Mohammad Hafeez . However, the semi-finals could not be repeated, as the team only won three games and was sixth.

The 2014/15 season was again marked by changes in the team. Matthew Wade , Andre Russell and Shakib Al Hasan have all been signed up. The planned addition by the New Zealander Jesse Ryder did not come about due to injuries and so this was done by the Englishman Ben Stokes . There was no improvement as a result; as in the previous season, they achieved sixth place with three wins.

The 2015/16 season was overshadowed by an interview given by new signing Chris Gale during the game against the Hobart Hurricanes , during which he made suggestive remarks to the journalist. The team came under pressure to punish the player and ultimately imposed a fine. During the season you could keep the possibility open for a long time to qualify for the semi-finals, but failed in the decisive game against the Adelaide Strikers .
