1996 season of Super 12

The 1997 season was the second edition of Super 12 , a rugby union competition with eight franchise teams from Australia and New Zealand and four provincial teams from South Africa .

Due to an internal regulation of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), the Free State provincial team from South Africa replaced the South African provincial team Western Province , which was the worst placed South African team last year.

A total of 69 games were played, with each team playing a round robin against the eleven other teams. There followed two semi-finals and finally the final. The champions were the blues from the New Zealand city of Auckland for the second time .

This year there were some innovations in the rules of the sport due to the professionalization of rugby union. So there were several world premieres in this edition of Super 12. Yellow and red cards, a ten-minute half-time break and tactical substitutions and substitutions were introduced.
