Schalk Willem Petrus Burger (born April 13, 1983 in Port Elizabeth ) is a South African rugby union player who plays as a winger for the South African national team , known as Springboks , and in super rugby for the Stormers . He became world champion with the Springboks in 2007 .

Career

Before making his debut for South Africa, Burger won the world title against Georgia with the U21 selection at the 2003 World Cup. In his first international match, he also made his first attempt . He came to two more appearances as a substitute during the tournament. He had started playing in the Currie Cup for the Western Province that same year . His first appearance in super rugby followed in the next year. Under Jake White, he was first set up in the starting lineup against Ireland in 2004 . In the same year, South Africa won its second title at the Tri Nations after 1998 . Due to his outstanding achievements, he was voted IRB Player of the Year , i.e. the best player in the world, that season .

In the following months, Burger established himself as one of the strongest wingers in the world, until a neck injury in 2006 knocked him out. Before the operation, it initially looked as if he would not be able to continue his career. However, these concerns should not be confirmed. In May 2007 he returned in the run-up to the World Cup . He was nominated for the World Cup, but banned for four games after a yellow card for too high a tackle in the first game against Samoa . After South Africa objected, his suspension was reduced to two games, so that he came to his second appearance in this tournament in the preliminary round. He stayed in the team until the end of the World Cup and was able to celebrate South Africa's second world title.

After a disappointing Tri Nations , Burger was nominated for the roster for the November 2008 international. The South Africans managed to win all games against the British selections, including the biggest home defeat in history for England . In 2009 he was part of the South Africa squad when it met the British and Irish Lions . The Springboks won the series against the Lions and the Tri-Nations tournament.

Burger has been playing in the Japanese Top League for the Tokyo club Suntory Sungoliath since 2014.

His father of the same name also played for the Springboks in the 1980s .
