Prosser is a city in the US state of Washington . The place has 4838 inhabitants and is in Benton County , whose county seat (administrative seat) he is.
Located on the Yakima River , the town was founded in 1882 by William Farrand Prosser , a former colonel in the Union Army and Republican congressman . Originally called "Prosser Falls", the addition "Falls" was later dropped. Prosser was officially registered as a parish in 1899 and was the first administrative seat of the newly formed Benton County in 1905. At the beginning of the 1900s, the place received a connection to the railroad and an irrigation system.
Today the economy in Prosser is characterized by agriculture. Besides Yakima , Prosser is the most important trading center of the Yakima Valley AVA and offers good connections to a large number of wine-growing businesses. The place describes itself as the "birthplace of the wine industry" in Washington.
Prosser is just off Interstate 82 .
