The Linkwood Malt Whiskey distillery is part of the Speyside distilleries .

location

It is located south of Elgin on approximately 4 hectares of land that is laid out like a park. The Burn of Linkwood pent up there , a tributary of the Lossie, supplies the cooling water for production. Today the facility consists of modern production facilities and the old warehouses.

history

The distillery was probably founded around 1825 by Peter Brown († 1869). He wanted to use it to increase the productivity of the Seafield Estates that he managed . In 1871 it was completely rebuilt by his son, William Brown († 1893), and in 1897 the facility was expanded again. From 1897 to 1933 it operated under Linkwood-Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd. In 1933 the distillery was owned by Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. accepted. Production stopped during the Second World War . In 1962 a renovation was carried out with rebuilding and replacement of the stills. The company's own steam engine was also shut down and production was connected to the electrical network. In 1971 the distillery was expanded by building a new still house ( Linkwood B ) with four stills . Between 1985 and 1990 the old distillery ( Linkwood A ) was closed. In 1992 Linkwood was then sold to the current owner United Distillers & Vintners and thus to Diageo .

production

According to tax documents, around 4,500 liters of whiskey per year were produced with two stills from 1825 . With the expansion in 1871, annual production rose to 227,000 liters. With another expansion in 1897, the production capacities were then doubled. Official current production figures are unknown. However, after the expansion in 1971, an annual production volume of around 2,240,000 liters can be assumed.

Products / flavors

Only approx. 2% of the production is also marketed as single malt .

Own brands are:

  • Linkwood 12 Year Old (Flora & Fauna)
  • Linkwood 26 Year Old (various flavors)

Some independent bottlers (Cadenhead, Duncan Taylor "Cask Strength", Gordon & MacPhail, Hart Brothers and Signatory) also bottle Linkwood whiskey.

The majority, however, is used for blended whiskeys such as Bells, White Horse, Dimple , Johnnie Walker or Haig .

Sightseeing

A visit to the distillery is possible, but must be booked in advance by telephone. There is no visitor center.

Oddities

The first head of the distillery after World War II, Roderick Mackenzie, was reportedly so convinced that any change in the distillery would negatively affect the character of the whiskey that he even resisted the removal of cobwebs.

The whiskeys produced in the two distilleries belonging to the distillery are bottled together, so that, strictly speaking, one would have to speak of "blended malt whiskey".

The swans on the reservoir are not kept for their beauty. They are supposed to keep the weeds down.
