The Harlequins (officially Harlequin Football Club ) are a rugby union team that plays in the Aviva Premiership , the top English league. The home games are at the stadium Twickenham Stoop in southwest London district Twickenham discharged. In connection with the main sponsor, the team is also known as the NEC Harlequins .
history
The club was founded in 1866 as Harlequin Rugby Football Club (the first game did not take place until 1867) and was given its current name in 1870. It arose from the division of the Hampstead Football Club ; Wasps FC emerged from the other half . In the first 40 years of their existence, the Harlequins played on no fewer than 15 different courts.
In 1906 the Rugby Football Union invited the Harlequins to use the newly built Twickenham Stadium . At the beginning of the 20th century it was only used two or three times a year for national team games. Soon after, the stadium was not only the seat of the English Association, but also the Harlequins. In 1963 they acquired a 57,000 m² athletics field a few hundred meters from Twickenham Stadium to use it for training. As a result, the new stadium The Stoop was built ; it is named after Adrian Stoop , a Dutch immigrant who played for the England team and was President of the Harlequins for 29 years.
After the introduction of organized league operations in 1987, the Harlequins were represented in the highest league. They won the English Cup twice; in 1988 they beat Bristol Rugby in the final and the Northampton Saints in 1991 . They lost the cup final in 1992, 1993 and 2001. Also in 2001, the Harlequins were the first British team to win the European Challenge Cup (then known as the European Shield); in the final the RC Narbonne was defeated. They repeated this success in 2004 (now under the name Parker Pen Challenge Cup); The final opponent was ASM Clermont Auvergne .
At the end of the 2004/05 season, the Harlequins had to relegate after finishing last in the championship. In July of this year they announced the formation of a partnership with the rugby league club London Broncos. Since then, both teams have shared the name and the stadium; they also wear similar looking jerseys. However, they are still organizationally separate and belong to different owners. In the 2005/06 season, the Harlequins dominated the National Division One almost at will, won 25 of 26 games and rose again to the Premiership.
In the 2011/12 season, the Harlequins won the English championship title for the first time.
