Twickenham is a borough of London and is located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in southwest London , approximately 16 kilometers southwest of central London, 3.2 km southeast of Hounslow and 4.2 km northwest of Kingston upon Thames . Twickenham is on the southeast side of the Thames . Twickenham has an extensive city center and is known for being the home of rugby union in England , with hundreds of thousands of spectators visiting Twickenham Stadium , the largest rugby stadium in the world, each year . The historic waterfront is known for its network of buildings and leisure facilities from the 18th century, many of which are still intact. This area has three stately mansions with public access: York House , Marble Hill and Strawberry Hill House . Another one that has been lost belongs to the 18th century aphoristic poet Alexander Popeau . This includes Horace Walpole's neo-Gothic model house, which gave its name to an entire borough, Strawberry Hill , and is connected to the country's oldest Roman Catholic university, St Mary's University .

Sports
Twickenham is home to the Rugby Football Union and is also home to Twickenham Rugby Stadium , one of the largest stadiums in England. The Harlequin Football Club , a rugby union club, has also its headquarters in Twickenham, playing mainly in the Twickenham Stoop .
Twickenham Stadium hosted the Rugby World Cup in 1991, 1999 and 2015 .
