Stephen Valentine Patrick William "Steve" Allen (born December 26, 1921 in New York City , New York , † October 30, 2000 in Encino , California ) was an American comedian , actor and musician .

Life

From 1954 to 1957 he hosted the Tonight Show , one of the first comedy shows ever and the first late night show in the world. He is considered one of the great pioneers of television. The show was continued after him by Jack Paar , Johnny Carson and other well-known presenters and is still regularly on NBC today . The Steve Allen Show ran under his name from 1956 to 1964 , in which the young Frank Zappa presented his Concerto for two Bicycles . In 1962 he produced the series Jazz Scene USA , in 1964 the TAMI Show .

Allen has also appeared in several films. In 1955 he played the title role in the Benny Goodman story . In 1962 he starred in the unfinished film Something's Got to Give alongside Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin . In Where were you when the lights went out? from 1968 with Doris Day , he played a radio announcer. He worked alongside Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder in the 1989 biopic Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis - A Life for Rock'n'Roll . In 1995 Allen was seen in Casino with Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone .

Steve Allen was married to Dorothy Goodman from 1943 to 1952. The connection resulted in three children together. From 1954 until his death, Allen was married to the American actress Jayne Meadows , who died in 2015 , with whom he had a son. After a long and successful career, Allen died in 2000 as a result of a traffic accident ( heart attack ) as a result of a ruptured blood vessel ( pericardial tamponade ).
