Winona Ryder [ wɪnoʊ̯nə ɹaɪ̯dɚ ] (* 29. October 1971 as Winona Laura Horowitz in Winona , Minnesota ) is an American actress .

life and career

Youth and career start

Winona Ryder grew up in 1978 in a community near Mendocino , California. She has a brother named Yuri (* 1976), who got his first name after Juri Gagarin , a half-sister named Sunyata (* 1968) and a half-brother named Jubal (* 1970) from her mother's first marriage, Cindy. Though her colleague Annabeth Gish was chosen to cast her , director and writer David Seltzer recognized her talent and cast her as Rina in his 1986 film Lucas, about a teenager ( Corey Haim ) and his life in high school . When she was about to decide what name to use in the credits, she chose Ryder as her stage name because a Mitch Ryder song was played in the background of the credits .

Her next film was Square Dance - Reunion in Texas (1987), in which the protagonist she portrays lives between two worlds: on a traditional farm and in a big city. Ryder's performance received good reviews, although neither film was a commercial success. Her acting as Lucas led director Tim Burton to cast her in his 1988 film Beetlejuice . In this comedy she played Lydia Deetz , who moves with her family into a house that is inhabited by ghosts (played by Geena Davis , Alec Baldwin and Michael Keaton ). Both Ryder and the film received positive reviews, and Beetlejuice also hit the box office.
