Petaluma is a city in Sonoma County in the US state of California with 55,300 inhabitants (as of 2004).
The geographical coordinates are: 38.24 ° North, 122.63 ° West. The urban area has a size of 36.0 km². Petaluma is about 60 km north of San Francisco . The city was founded by gold diggers in 1852 and experienced rapid population growth . Notable branches of industry are chicken farming (since around 1920) and the resulting egg production.
