Joseph Andrew "Joe" Enochs (born September 1, 1971 in Petaluma , California ) is a former American soccer player and current coach . He was a player and coach for VfL Osnabrück for 21 years and played an international match for the USA . He has been the head coach of FSV Zwickau since summer 2018 .
Player career
In his youth, Enochs played on the McDowell Celtic school team and the Petaluma Valley Soccer Club . He later received an offer from San Francisco United and also played tournaments in Europe and South America with the club's youth team. In 1994 Enochs came to Germany for FC St. Pauli . There he played for two years with the amateurs before moving to VfL Osnabrück in 1996 , where he stayed until the end of his career.
First, Enochs drew attention to himself with a few references; but over time it became more constant. Due to his commitment and his open manner, he soon became a crowd favorite in Osnabrück . On May 19, 2007, Enochs completed his 358th league game against Holstein Kiel for VfL and thus became the club's new record player - he had surpassed Uwe Brunn's old record .
Immediately after relegation to the second division with VfL Osnabrück, Enochs announced the end of his active career on May 18, 2008.
Coaching career
After his playing career, Enochs took over the coaching position of the second team (U21) at VfL Osnabrück. On November 9, 2010, he acquired his Trainer B license at the Barsinghausen Sports School .
On March 21, 2011 Enochs was interim coach of the first team at VfL. Head coach Karsten Baumann and assistant coach Heiko Nowak had previously been released from their activities due to the sporting situation after four defeats in a row and the team slipping onto the relegation site. Since Enochs only had the B license, however, he was allowed to train the team for a maximum of three weeks. Therefore, Heiko Flottmann then took over the coaching position, and Enochs acted as assistant coach until the end of the season. Then he trained the second team again. In 2014, after completing the 60th coaching course at the Hennes-Weisweiler Academy , Enochs received the football instructor license.
On July 1, 2014, Enochs took over the Osnabrück U19 team. In addition, he became head of the VfL performance center for young talent. Since August 24, 2015, Enochs was again - initially as a temporary solution - coach of the first VfL team after the club had separated from Maik Walpurgis . He was initially assigned to look after the team for the next two point games. After two victories, he received a contract as head coach until 2017, which was extended to 2020 in early 2017. On October 4, 2017, he was released by the management, at that time VfL was on a relegation spot. Enochs then declared that he wanted to continue working as a coach in professional football in the future and leave VfL after 21 years as a player and coach. He turned down an offer from the association to continue to employ him in another position.
For the third division season 2018/19 Enochs took over FSV Zwickau as head coach and was seventh with the team. At the beginning of February 2020, his contract, which was valid until spring, was extended to June 2022.
Goal of the month
In September 2004, his goal in the cup match against FC Bayern Munich was voted goal of the month in the ARD sports show .
National team
2001 Enochs was called up for a game in the national soccer team of the United States : On June 7, 2001, he had there in a friendly against Ecuador his only use; the game in Columbus , Ohio ended 0-0.
Private
Enochs' mother Beatrice was a teacher and his father Mike was a freight forwarder. His three siblings also played soccer when they were young. Enochs is married and has two daughters. He graduated from Sacramento State University with a degree in forensic science.
In 2008 he opened the Joe Enochs Sportsbar in the old town of Osnabrück .
particularities
The Joe Enochs children's grandstand at Bremer Brücke , which is unique in Germany and where children can watch VfL Osnabrück's home games under supervision, bears his name.
Enochs was one of the few professional footballers who could do without an advisor. Contract extensions were sometimes sealed with a handshake with VfL manager Lothar Gans .
