The 2020/21 season of the 3rd soccer league should be the 13th season of the third-highest German division in men's soccer . It should open on September 18, 2020 with the game of 1. FC Kaiserslautern against relegated Dynamo Dresden and end on May 22, 2021 with the 38th matchday. The promotion games for the 2nd Bundesliga are planned for May 27 and 30, 2021. Originally, the opening was scheduled for July 24, 2020 and the last match day for May 15, 2021.

Since the pre-season game operations were interrupted from March 9th to May 30th due to the COVID-19 pandemic and only ended on July 4th, the postponements were necessary.

Special features due to the COVID-19 pandemic

After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , the end of the 2019/20 season and the start of 2020/21 were postponed. The DFB and the DFL (for the national leagues) adjusted the summer transfer period (generally July 1 to August 31) in consultation with FIFA . The transfer window is open on July 1st (changeover period I.1) and from July 15 to October 5, 2020 (changeover period I.2). The first, one-day phase was used in particular to register contracts starting on July 1, 2020.
