The 3rd league 2011/12 was the fourth season of the single-track 3rd league in German men's football. The season began on July 22, 2011 with the game 1. FC Heidenheim against Kickers Offenbach (2-1). After the 21st matchday on December 17, 2011, a five-week winter break began. The season ended on May 5, 2012.
Two game days before the end of the season, SV Sandhausen secured promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga , one game day later, VfR Aalen , the second direct promoted team, was confirmed. For both it was the first second division promotion in the club's history. The SSV Jahn Regensburg qualified as third in the table for the relegation matches to 2. Bundesliga, where you against the Karlsruher SC prevailed and also rose.
FC Carl Zeiss Jena , Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and Werder Bremen II had to relegate to the regional league . For Oberhausen it was the second relegation in a row.
The top scorer with 17 goals was Marcel Reichwein from FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt .
