The twelve teams from the 2011/12 Bundesliga season took part in the tournament. These were divided into three groups of four teams each. Within each group, each team played each other once. The playing time was 1 × 12 minutes without changing sides. There were three points for a win and one point for a draw. In the event of a tie between two or more teams after a group match, the better goal difference decided the placement, and if the goal difference was also the same, the higher number of goals scored. If then still no decision has been made, the result counted in a direct comparison. The last criterion would have been the time of the first tournament goal.
The group winners, the runners-up and the two group thirds with the best points reached the quarter-finals. If it was a draw from the quarter-finals after regular playing time, a nine-meter shoot-out followed. The losing semi-finalists took third place together.
