The 2012/13 season of the 2nd Bundesliga was the 39th season of the second highest German division in men's football . It began on August 3, 2012 and ended on May 19, 2013. The relegation games between the sixteenth of the Bundesliga and the third of the 2nd Bundesliga were for 23 and 27 May 2013, the games between the sixteenth of the 2nd Bundesliga and the third of the 3rd division scheduled for May 24th and 28th, 2013. From December 18, 2012 to January 31, 2013, the season was interrupted by a winter break.
Champion Hertha BSC with nine points ahead of fellow promoted Eintracht Braunschweig . The 1. FC Kaiserslautern missed promotion in the relegation. The bottom of the table was beaten by SSV Jahn Regensburg , who went straight back to the 3rd division. The second relegated team was MSV Duisburg , whose license was revoked after the season for economic reasons. The beneficiary of this situation was SV Sandhausen , who had been relegated to the sport and was allowed to play in the 2nd Bundesliga in the following season. Even before this decision, Dynamo Dresden had secured relegation as the first second division since its reintroduction.
