Frank Schaefer (born October 26, 1963 in Cologne ) is a German football coach .

Career

From the age of ten, Frank Schaefer played as a goalkeeper in the youth teams of 1. FC Köln despite his small height , but had to end his active career in his youth due to an injury. He had worked as a youth coach for the club since 1982 before taking over the U-19s from Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1997 . The qualified sports teacher returned to 1. FC Köln in the summer of 2003, initially as a U-19 coach, in November 2006 as an assistant coach for the first team and from 2007 as head coach for the U-23 team.

After Zvonimir Soldo's leave of absence on October 24, 2010, Schaefer succeeded him as head coach of 1. FC Cologne. Under his direction, the billy goats won seven home games in a row, which had previously only been possible under Hennes Weisweiler .

On April 19, 2011, Schaefer announced that he would resign from his post as head coach at the end of the season. He put the reasons for his resignation in the personal area. This decision was preceded by a debate in the media about a statement by sports director Volker Finke , who commented on Schaefer's committed advocacy for the Christian faith as follows: “This is where his problem obviously comes from being able to combine his job as a professional football coach with his private life situation . “On April 27, 2011, Schaefer finally announced his immediate resignation as head coach. Finke took care of the team for the rest of the season.

For the new season, starting July 1, 2011, Schaefer took over the position of talent coordinator. From April 12, 2012 he was head coach of the club again. He took over the office of Ståle Solbakken , which the club management released on the same day due to continued failure, initially until the end of the season. After Schaefer had failed to stay up with Cologne and was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga, he announced on May 5, 2012 that he would resign from the position of head coach and hold another position in the club.

On May 22, 2012, Cologne presented the new management trio. In addition to head coach Holger Stanislawski and the head of squad planning and transfer management, Jörg Jakobs, Schaefer held the position of sporting director. From July 1, 2013 to March 31, 2016, Schaefer was in charge of the club's junior performance center. On September 27, 2016, he assumed the same position at Fortuna Düsseldorf . In November 2019, Fortuna Düsseldorf appointed Schaefer director of the youth training center.

Schaefer is in possession of the DFB soccer teacher license .
