Season course

Promotion fight

Before the start of the season, the Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Köln and Hamburger SV were the biggest favorites for promotion. In the first half of the season, both of them lived up to their role: HSV were just ahead of FC Herbstmeister, while 1. FC Union Berlin followed in third place after a first half of the season without defeat, including 10 draws. While FC St. Pauli , 1. FC Heidenheim and Holstein Kiel were gradually eliminated from the field of pursuers , the newly promoted SC Paderborn 07 pushed through to the promotion positions thanks to a strong back series (1st place with 32 points in the second round table ) . After 32 match days, 1. FC Köln were crowned second division champions for the fourth time and celebrated their promotion back to the Bundesliga; in the end, it was FC that won the most and scored the most hits. The HSV, on the other hand, played a disastrous second half of the season (15th place with 19 points in the second half of the table), which one day before the end finally led to a missed promotion; the battle for second place turned into a long-distance duel between SC Paderborn and Union Berlin on the last day of the match. Ultimately, Paderborn managed to march straight through to the Bundesliga despite a 3-1 defeat in Dresden on the last match day, Union Berlin finished the season third in the table and competed in the promotion relegation against VfB Stuttgart . After a 2-2 win in Stuttgart and a 0-0 win at home, Union Berlin rose to the Bundesliga for the first time thanks to the away goals rule .

Relegation battle

After the first promotion to the second division, there was another premiere for 1. FC Magdeburg with the direct relegation, which was determined on the 33rd match day . In addition to the Sachsen-Anhaltinern, MSV Duisburg was also relegated after only two seasons in the second division. On the last matchday, SV Sandhausen ensured direct relegation by a 2: 2 at SSV Jahn Regensburg , FC Ingolstadt 04 closed the season after a 2: 4 defeat in Heidenheim in 16th place in the table and stepped in the relegation against the SV Wehen Wiesbaden . After a 2-1 win in Wiesbaden, the FCI lost 3-2 in the home game and were relegated to the third division due to the away goals rule .
