Ilija Christow Gruew ( Bulgarian Илия Христов Груев , English transcription: Iliya Hristov Gruev ; born October 30, 1969 in Sofia ) is a former Bulgarian football player and today's coach . Most recently he was the head coach of MSV Duisburg .

Career

As a player

Ilija Gruew started his career at PFK Montana and later played with Lewski Sofia , Altay İzmir , Slawia Sofia , Lokomotive Sofia and Neftochimik Burgas . In April 1998 he was suspended for eight months for doping . In 2000, the attacking midfielder moved from Burgas to the German second division club MSV Duisburg , where he played 80 games in the 2nd Bundesliga in four years, scoring 11 goals. In 2004 Gruew moved to the regional division KFC Uerdingen 05 , where he was active for one season. After the Uerdinger's license withdrawal, Gruev played at the second division relegated FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt , where he ended his active career on June 30, 2006.

In the Bulgarian national team Gruew came to a total of 13 missions.

As a trainer

Started as an assistant coach

He has a coach A license and was assistant coach for the A-Juniors of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt from July 1, 2006 and from the 2007/08 season coach of the Bundesliga A-Juniors of Rot-Weiß Erfurt. He was also a successful player coach at FSV Harz 04 Erfurt at that time .

Between January 8, 2009 and December 2010 Gruew was assistant coach at the side of Krassimir Balakow at the Bulgarian first division club FC Chernomorez Burgas , where with Fredi Bobic another ex-Bundesliga professional acted as sporting director. In January 2011, Gruew was chosen by Lothar Matthäus as assistant coach for the Bulgarian national team after Zanko Zwetanow moved to the Cypriot Anorthosis Famagusta . When Balakow was hired by Croatian club HNK Hajduk Split in the summer of 2011 , Gruew followed him again as assistant coach. From March 22, 2012 Gruew worked, again under Balakow, at 1. FC Kaiserslautern as an assistant coach. On May 18, 2012, 1. FC Kaiserslautern separated from the coaching team.

On September 3, 2012 Gruew received a contract as assistant coach until the end of the season at his former club, MSV Duisburg. There he worked under Kosta Runjaic , who at the same time took over the relegation-threatened club as head coach. Together they led the MSV to eleventh place in the table. Runjaic emphasized at the time that he would only fulfill his contract, which ran until 2014, if Gruew received a new contract. This was followed by the forced relegation of MSV Duisburg due to the withdrawal of its license. At first it seemed as if the coaching team would stay together with MSV, but Runjaic left the club as they could not guarantee the license for the 3rd division. For this reason, Gruew hesitated for a long time before he finally signed a new contract with MSV when he received the license and continued to work there as an assistant coach under Karsten Baumann .

On September 24, 2013, 1. FC Kaiserslautern signed him again. At FCK he worked under head coach Runjaic and alongside assistant coach Oliver Schäfer as another assistant coach. The contract initially ran until June 2015 and was then extended. After Runjaic's resignation on September 23, 2015, Gruew and Schäfer were to take over the management of the second team at FCK. He refused, however, and then worked as a scout due to his existing contract.

First job as head coach

On November 3rd, 2015 Gruew returned to MSV Duisburg. After head coach Gino Lettieri was dismissed, he took over his post. The MSV was the second club station within three years that Gruew returned to as a coach. At the same time, it was his first position as head coach. He could not prevent the immediate relegation of the MSV to the 3rd division. On May 13, 2017, on the penultimate matchday, after a 3-0 win at Fortuna Köln with MSV Duisburg, he was promoted back to the second division.

On October 1, 2018, MSV Duisburg parted ways with Gruev after the first eight games of the season without a win.

Engagement in the Bundesliga

In May 2019, Bundesliga club Werder Bremen announced that the Bulgarian had been appointed assistant coach for the 2019/20 season . Gruew's son Ilia Gruev was playing in the Bremen youth team at that time and received a professional contract in summer 2019, so that Gruew is now one of his son's coaches. Werder Bremen he is especially for the training of standard situations be responsible.
