Karsten Baumann (born October 14, 1969 in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) ) is a former German football player and today's coach .

Career

As a player

The defender took his first steps as a footballer at TuS Eversten , after which he played at VfB Oldenburg until 1988 . At the age of 19 he moved to the Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln . Over time, he was able to secure a regular place as a defender in the first team. His achievements were rewarded by the DFB with invitations for the U-21 national team . There he was used once, also in the Olympic national team. In 1998 Borussia Dortmund brought him to strengthen the defensive area. For a long time he also had a regular place in the Ruhr area. Nevertheless, he was sorted out at the end of the 1999/2000 season and moved to the 2nd Bundesliga to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . A year later he moved back to Cologne , where he joined the lower class club SCB Preußen Köln . He then worked for Wuppertal SV Borussia and SG Wattenscheid 09 before ending his playing career in 2006.

As a trainer

After the end of his active career, Baumann began a five-month trainer training at the Hennes-Weisweiler Academy in Cologne. There he received the UEFA Pro license and was honored as the best course leader. During his apprenticeship he already worked for the association of contract football players as a coach for unemployed professional footballers. From February 20, 2008 to April 28, 2009 he was the head coach of the third division club FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt .

On June 12, 2009 he signed a two-year contract with the second division relegated VfL Osnabrück , with whom he celebrated promotion to the second division on May 8, 2010 after a 1-0 win at Wacker Burghausen. On March 21, 2011, VfL Osnabrück announced that Baumann and his assistant coach Heiko Nowak had been released from his work. As a reason, the club named the sporting situation after four defeats in a row and the team slipping to the relegation place.

Karsten Baumann was presented on February 22nd, 2012 at a press conference of the second division club FC Erzgebirge Aue , in twelfth place in the table, as the successor to the coach Rico Schmitt, who had been on leave the day before . After successfully staying up in 2011/12 , he got into the relegation battle with his team in the following season. After the 0-0 home game against MSV Duisburg on matchday 31 of the 2012/13 season , the relegation-threatened club announced on April 28, 2013 the leave of absence of Baumann and his assistant coach Marco Fights.

In the season 2013/14 was Baumann head coach of the start of the season in the 3. Liga zwangsabgestiegenen MSV Duisburg , but with the Baumann did not renew the expiring end of the season contract.

On December 9, 2014 Baumann took over the coaching position at the third division club Hansa Rostock . On December 5, 2015, he was on leave together with sports director Uwe Klein .

Karsten Baumann has been leading the training of several soccer school teams at the International School on the Rhine since 2017 and at the same time should contribute to the professionalization of the sports program at the school.
