Uwe Klein (born January 11, 1970 in Siegen ) is a former German football player and coach , and has been the sports director at Fortuna Düsseldorf since June 2020.

Player career

In the years before 1994, Uwe Klein was active for Eintracht Haiger in the Oberliga Hessen before he was under contract with VfL Wolfsburg from 1994 . With the "Wolves" he made it to the DFB Cup final in 1995 (3-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach ) and was promoted to the Bundesliga in the 1996/97 season . After the promotion he moved to the Regionalliga West / Südwest to Sportfreunde Siegen due to frequent injuries . After four seasons there, he finally moved to SpVgg EGC Wirges in the league and ended his active playing career after the 2001/02 season for health reasons.

Coaching career

After obtaining his coaching license , he received a contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2002 . Since then he has been working as an assistant coach. In the 2003/2004 season he rose with Fortuna from the league to the regional league. In June 2007, Uwe Klein successfully completed the DFB's course to train as a football teacher at the Hennes-Weisweiler Academy and is therefore the holder of the UEFA Pro license. In the 2007/2008 season they qualified for the newly created 3rd division. In the 2008/09 season he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with Düsseldorf and in the 2011/2012 season relegation promotion to the Bundesliga , from which they were relegated the following year. After the 2013/14 season, Klein's contract was not extended.

Other tasks in sport

In November 2014, Klein became the sports director of the third division club Hansa Rostock . Klein was interim sports director in Rostock for six weeks until the end of November 2015, until Markus Kompp, as the new CEO, relied on other management staff. He then continued his work as sports director, but was given a leave of absence together with coach Karsten Baumann in December 2015.

On July 1, 2016, Uwe Klein returned to Fortuna Düsseldorf as head of the squad planning and scouting department; since June 1, 2020, he has been responsible for the sports department on the club's board.
