He stayed there from 1975 to 1979 and, with Sertich's help, became a leading player on the team.

After his performance in the university team, he was invited to the US national team in 1979, which was coached by Herb Brooks at the time. In 1980 he was nominated for the Winter Olympics. The USA beat the strongly favored team of the USSR 4: 3 in the final round. The game went down in history as the so-called " Miracle on Ice " . Two days later they beat Finland 4-2 in the second game of the final round and thus won the gold medal. In the game against the USSR Harrington played the assist on Mike Eruzione , who scored the winning goal.

For a short time Harrington was active with the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League , but quickly moved to the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League , where he scored seven points in twelve games. In a game against the Hershey Bears , Harrington was attacked by Lou Franceschetti . He passed out for five minutes and had to spend the night in the hospital with a concussion , broken jaw and nose, and four lost teeth. From 1980, Harrington played for a year at HC Lugano in Switzerland before returning to the USA to play again for the US national team. With this he took part in the ice hockey world championship in 1981 , 1982 and 1983 . Between short periods of work in the Central Hockey League , he took part in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo .
