Matjaž Kopitar (born November 6, 1965 in Jesenice , SR Slovenia ) is a former Slovenian ice hockey player and current coach . His sons Anže Kopitar and Gašper Kopitar are also professional ice hockey players.

Career

Matjaž Kopitar began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of the HK Jesenice , for whose professional team he was active from 1983 to 1995. With Jesenice he was Yugoslavian champion in 1985, 1987 and 1988 and Slovenian champion in 1992, 1993 and 1994 . From 1995 to 1997 the attacker played for HK Bled in the Slovenian ice hockey league . From 1998 to 2000 he was active for DEK Klagenfurt in the National League , the second Austrian division. He last played for HDK Stavbar Maribor in his Slovenian homeland from 2001 to 2003 before ending his career at the age of 37.

International

For Yugoslavia , Kopitar took part in the 1991 B World Cup. For Slovenia he took part in the C World Championships in 1993 and 1994 .

As a trainer

From 2003 to 2005 and from 2006 to 2008 Kopitar was the assistant coach of the Slovenian national team. In the 2006/07 season he also looked after his home club HK Jesenice as head coach in the Austrian ice hockey league .

From 2010 to 2015 Kopitar was the head coach of the Slovenian national team. At the World Championships of Division I in 2012 and 2014, he rose to the top division with the Slovenian national ice hockey team , but could not achieve relegation there. In February 2013, he led the national team by winning the Olympic qualification tournament in Vojens, Denmark, for their first participation in the Winter Olympics. At the Winter Games itself, he and his team reached seventh place. In the 2016/17 season he was coach of the Swiss second division club HC Red Ice Martigny-Verbier , but was replaced by Adrien Plavsic in February 2017 .
