Group D games were played from February 7 to 10, 2013 in the newly built EgeTrans Arena in Bietigheim-Bissingen , the home ground of the Bietigheim Steelers from the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey .
The German national team experienced a historic debacle and missed participation in the Winter Games for the first time in Olympic history in a sporting way. Only in 1948 did not a German ice hockey team take part in the Olympics, at that time for political reasons. Despite a defeat after extra time against Germany, Austria secured first place in Group D in the last game and thus the first participation in an Olympic tournament since 2002 .
