The qualification for the 2014 Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Tournament took place between November 2012 and February 2013. Previously, nine of the twelve participants had already qualified directly through their placement in the IIHF world rankings and did not have to play another qualifying tournament. The three remaining places were played in a multi-stage system and finally won by the national teams of Austria , Latvia and Slovenia . The German and Belarusian national teams, which were still represented at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , missed the qualification.

Group D games were played from February 7 to 10, 2013 in the newly built EgeTrans Arena in Bietigheim-Bissingen , the home ground of the Bietigheim Steelers from the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey .

The German national team experienced a historic debacle and missed participation in the Winter Games for the first time in Olympic history in a sporting way. Only in 1948 did not a German ice hockey team take part in the Olympics, at that time for political reasons. Despite a defeat after extra time against Germany, Austria secured first place in Group D in the last game and thus the first participation in an Olympic tournament since 2002 .

The group F games took place from 7th to 10th February 2013 in the SE Arena in Vojens, Denmark . The stadium, which has a capacity of 5,000 and was built in 2011, is the home ground of the Danish first division club SønderjyskE Ishockey .

In the course of the tournament, outsiders Slovenia surprisingly qualified for the Winter Olympics in Sochi. The team of national coach Matjaž Kopitar already led the table in Group F after two 2-1 wins against Denmark and Belarus and were not before the final game against Ukraine, both from Belarus and the hosts due to the direct comparison won to displace more of the first place.
