Career

Robert Dowd began his career as a hockey player in 2000 with the Billingham Juniors, a youth team from his hometown. There he was also temporarily active for the Billingham Bombers. In 2005 he was also used once by the Solihull Kings in the third-rate English Premier Ice Hockey League . He then went to the United States for a year , but could not prevail at the Detroit Trackers and did not play a game for the team from the metropolis. At the age of 18 he moved to Sheffield , where he was active both with the Scimitars in the English Premier Ice Hockey League and for the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League , the top British league.

After five years with the Yorkshire team , with whom he won the British Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2011 and also finished third in the IIHF Continental Cup in 2010 , Dowd moved to league rivals Belfast Giants in Northern Ireland in 2011 . But just a year later he was drawn to IF Troja-Ljungby in the second Swedish division . In 2013 he returned to Sheffield to the Steelers and was able to win the EIHL playoffs with them in 2014. In 2015 and 2016 he won the main round of the Elite Ice Hockey League with his club and thus again achieved the British championship title. In 2017 he won the EIHL playoffs.

International

For Great Britain Dowd took part in the junior division for the first time in the Division I U18 Junior World Championship in 2005 when the team was relegated. In the following year , as the top scorer in Division II with six goals and eight assists, he made a major contribution to the immediate resurgence of the British offspring. At the U20 World Junior Championships in 2007 and 2008 , he played with the British team in Division I.

Dowd made his debut in the British men's selection in November 2008 in the first round of Olympic qualification for the 2010 Vancouver Games, in which the British were only third behind Japan and Poland and were eliminated. At the World Championships in Division I in 2009 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014 , 2015 , 2016 , 2017 and 2018 , he also competed for his home country. In 2012, with his five goals in the games against Ukraine (4: 3 after extra time) and Hungary (5: 4), including the winning goal, he was not only significantly involved in keeping the British in Group A of Division I , but also became the tournament's top scorer. A year later he only met once and could not prevent his team from relegating to Group B of Division I. In 2017, together with his compatriots Colin Shields and Evan Mosey as well as the Croatian Borna Rendulić, he was the second best scorer behind the Japanese Daisuke Obara and together with Shields also the second best scorer behind Obara, which made a significant contribution to the promotion to the A group of Division I. A year later he scored the 1: 2 connection goal almost ten minutes before the end of the decisive game against Hungary and thus the cornerstone of the 3-2 success after penalty shootout, whereby the British rose to the highest level of the World Championships for the first time since relegation in 1994 . Previously, in November 2012 and February 2013, he represented his colors in the Olympic qualification for the 2014 Games in Sochi .
