Colin Shields (born January 27, 1980 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a British ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Belfast Giants in the Elite Ice Hockey League since 2012 . His cousin Stephen Murphy is also a professional ice hockey player. His father Martin Shields was also a British international.
Career
Colin Shields began his career as a hockey player with the Paisley Pirates , for whose professional team he was already active as a 15-year-old in the 1994/95 season in four games in the British Hockey League . From 1998 to 2000 he played for the Cleveland Barons in the US Junior League North American Hockey League . There the center was in his second year the top scorer and top scorer of the league, whereupon he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in the sixth round as a total of 195th player by the Philadelphia Flyers , for which he never played. Instead, he attended the University of Maine from 2000 to 2004 , for whose ice hockey team he played in parallel in Hockey East and with which he won the 2004 Hockey East Championship. He also received numerous individual awards during this period.
During the 2004/05 season , Shields played for the San Diego Gulls , Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies and Greenville Grrrowl in the ECHL . The following season he spent in his British homeland with the Belfast Giants from the Elite Ice Hockey League . With the team he immediately won the EIHL championship. He then returned to North America, where he was on the ice in the 2006/07 season for the Fresno Falcons and Idaho Steelheads from the ECHL. After a year with the Newcastle Vipers from the EIHL, the Briton played again for the Belfast Giants from 2008 to 2011. With his team he won the 2010 EIHL Playoff Championship. He himself made a significant contribution to this success and was voted Player of the Year for the league and its first All-Star team. On October 2, 2010 he was among a selection of the best EIHL players who competed in a friendly against the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League .
The 2011/12 season spent Shields at HC Morzine-Avoriaz in the French Ligue Magnus . He then signed a contract with the Sheffield Steelers from the EIHL, but switched back to the Belfast Giants during the current season , with whom he again won the Elite Ice Hockey League in 2014. In 2017 he was voted best British player in the EIHL. In 2018 he won the EIHL Cup with the Giants and was the best British goalscorer in the league.
International
For Great Britain, Shields took part in the junior division in the U20 Junior C World Championships in 1997 , 1998 and 2000 .
In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the World Championships in Division I in 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014 , 2015 , 2016 , 2017 when he was named the best striker of the Tournament was chosen and together with his compatriots Robert Dowd and Evan Mosey as well as the Croatian Borna Rendulić was the second best scorer behind the Japanese Daisuke Obara and together with Dowd also the second best scorer behind Obara, which he made a significant contribution to promotion to the A group of Division I. , and in 2018 , when the British returned to the top division in world ice hockey for the first time after relegation in 1994.
