British Hockey League
The British Hockey League was the top division in ice hockey in Great Britain between 1982 and 1996 . When the league was introduced in 1982, it replaced the three previously existing regional leagues, the Inter-City League from southern England, the English League North from northern England and the Northern League from Scotland . With the Dutch brewery company Heineken, BHL had a main and name sponsor. Hence the league was also known as the Heineken League . The British Hockey League had the BBC as its media partner .
During its existence, the BHL has changed the game mode several times. The top premier division was established in 1983. Three years later, Division One followed as a division below the Premier Division. This was divided into a North Conference and a South Conference in the 1987/88 and 1993/94 seasons. In 1987, the first third-rate Division Two was introduced, which, however, was renamed English Division One for the 1988/89 season and separated entirely from the British Hockey League in the summer of 1992. When the British Hockey League was dissolved in 1996, the Ice Hockey Superleague was founded as its successor .
