Stephen James Murphy (born December 11, 1981 in Dundee , Scotland ) is a British ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Belfast Giants in the Elite Ice Hockey League since 2009 . His cousin Colin Shields is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Stephen Murphy began his career as an ice hockey player in the British Hockey League , in which he played from 1997 to 2004 for the Paisley Pirates , Fife Flyers , with whom he won both the main round and the playoffs of the league in 2000 and also in the All-Star -Team of the league, Dundee Stars , with whom he also won the main round and playoffs in 2002 and was voted Player of the Year by both the coaches and his fellow players, and Bracknell Bees was active. For the 2004/05 season , the goalkeeper moved to Bräcke IK from Division 1 , the third Swedish division. The 2008/09 season spent Murphy at the Manchester Phoenix from the EIHL and was re-elected British goalkeeper of the year. Since then he has played for their league rivals Belfast Giants , with whom he won the EIHL playoffs in 2010, to which he made a significant contribution with the best goals against goals and the best catch quota in the league. In 2011 he also achieved the lowest average for goals against in the EIHL. In 2012 and 2014 he and his team won the British championship by winning the EIHL main round . In both years he again scored the lowest conceded goals and was consequently elected to the First All Star Team in 2012 and the Second All Star Team in 2014. In 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 he was again named Goalkeeper of the Year in Great Britain.

International

For Great Britain , Murphy took part in the junior division of the U18 Junior B World Championship in 1999 and the U20 Junior C World Championship in 2000 and after switching to the current division system of Division II of the U20 World Junior Championship in 2001 .
