In the top division, the four best teams in each group qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The total number of games is 64 games.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams are divided qualitatively into two groups of six teams. This is done on the basis of the final placements of the world championships in 2017 . Division III plays with six teams. In qualifying for Division III, four teams will play for a place in Division III 2019.

The last two of the two preliminary round groups are relegated from the top division to Division IA. Slovakia, as the host of the 2019 World Cup, cannot relegate. For the same reason, the first two will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth placed will be relegated to the IB division. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applies to Divisions II A and II B.

The 82nd Men's Ice Hockey World Championship took place between May 4th and 20th, 2018 in the Danish capital Copenhagen and in Herning . The venues were the Royal Arena in Copenhagen with 12,500 seats and the 11,000-seat Jyske Bank Boxes in Herning. A total of 520,481 spectators attended the 64 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 8,132 per game.

Sweden secured the title for the eleventh time , defeating Switzerland 3-2 in the shootout in the final . The Swedes repeated the title win of the previous year, while Switzerland, as in 2013 , returned home with the silver medal. Third place went to the USA , who won the bronze medal for the third time in six years by beating Canada 4-1 .

After the sixth of seven match days, the Belarusian team was the first to be relegated to Division I. The relegation after 14 years of excellence was sealed by the 4-0 defeat in the penultimate game against Austria , although the Belarusians had dismissed their head coach Dave Lewis after the third game and replaced him with his previous assistant Sergei Puschkow . For the first time since 2004, the team from the Alpine region managed to stay in the top division. At the same time, the Austrians were the first promoted since France in 2008 , who managed to stay in the top tier of the world championships. As a second relegated World Cup newcomer South Korea had to go straight back to Division I. The East Asians lost all seven tournament games.

The group A tournament was held from April 22nd to 28th, 2018 in the Hungarian capital Budapest . The games took place in the Papp László Sportaréna , which can hold 9,479 spectators . A total of 52,065 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 3,471 per game.

In the extremely high-performance Group A of Division I, newcomers Great Britain and Italy , who were relegated from the previous year , prevailed as promoters in the top division. The British managed to march through from Group B of Division I within two seasons. Even before the final day, five of the six teams were able to make the promotion. While the British had the best starting position with nine points, Italy, Kazakhstan , Slovenia and Hungary followed in the other places with six points each.

Kazakhstan was able to catch up with Great Britain on the final day with a 6-1 victory over Poland , but subsequently had to hope for a victory for the Hungarians. Poland was relegated to the B group due to the defeat after having been in the A group for the last four years. In the duel between the tied teams from Italy and the Olympic athletes Slovenia, the Italians won with a goal two seconds before the end of the game and thus preserved their chances of direct promotion. In contrast to Kazakhstan, Italy was dependent on a point win by the British in the final game of the tournament in order to return to the top division. In the last tournament game it looked like hosts Hungary and Kazakhstan would rise up to 15 seconds before the end of the game. Hungary had meanwhile led 2-0 and missed a penalty when the score was 2-1 . Robert Farmer, however, equalized the game in the final minute with the help of Hungary's goalkeeper Ádám Vay and sealed the British return to the top division for the first time in 24 years. The last time Great Britain played there at the 1994 World Cup . Italy also rose through the British point gain.

Kazakhstan, Hungary and Slovenia followed in third to fifth place. In particular, the performance of Slovenia, as the only Olympic participant in the field of six and relegated from the top division last year, showed the balance of the field of participants. The Slovenians last performed worse at a World Cup tournament in 2000 .

The individual awards were shared among three of the six participating nations. The Hungarian Ádám Vay was honored as the best goalkeeper. He was also appointed to the All-Star Team. The highest catch quota , however, was recorded by the native Swede Henrik Karlsson , who played for Kazakhstan, while the Italian Marco De Filippo recorded the lowest goals against . The only two shutouts during the tournament were Karlsson and De Filippo's compatriot Andreas Bernard . The title of best defender and the call to the All-Star-Team secured Ben O'Connor a player of the newly promoted Great Britain. Next to him was Slovenia's Sabahudin Kovačevič in the all-star squad. His compatriot Jan Urbas was named the best striker , while the Briton Brett Perlini was named the most valuable player and the Kazakh Roman Startschenko finished the tournament as the top scorer. Both Perlini and Startschenko were called up with the Hungarian Balázs Sebők in the attack line of the All-Star team. Startschenko was the leader in both categories with six goals and eight scorer points . The Italian Ivan Deluca collected the most assists in the tournament . In the plus / minus rating, the Kazakhs Kevin Dallman and Maxim Semjonow and the Slovenes Matic Podlipnik and Miha Verlič shared first place with a rating of +4.

The group B tournament was held from April 22 to 28, 2018 in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas . The games took place in the Žalgirio Arena , which holds 13,762 spectators . A total of 46,040 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 3,069 per game.

With an almost flawless record of five wins from five games - only one game was only won in extra time - hosts Lithuania made their first appearance in Group A of Division I in their current form in front of a home crowd. Last, the Balts were among the top 22 teams in 2006 . The Lithuanians - occupied by the former NHL players Darius Kasparaitis and Dainius Zubrus - prevailed on the last day of the tournament in the Baltic direct duel for promotion against Estonia , which ultimately came in third. Japan and Ukraine, who were relegated from the previous year, missed their return to the A group in second and fourth place. Croatia had to relegate to Division II for the first time in five years after losing to newly promoted Romania , while the Southeastern Europeans were able to keep their place in the division for the first time in the same period.

In the individual awards, the Estonian Villem-Henrik Koitmaa , who had the highest catch rate and the lowest counter goal , was awarded as the best goalie, the Japanese Ryō Hashimoto as the best defender and the Lithuanian Arnoldas Bosas as the best striker. The Japanese Ryō Hashimoto also collected the most points scorer . There were five hits among his eight scorer points. However, the top scorer was Arnoldas Bosas with six goals. Most assists had his compatriot Dainius Zubrus, who put up six goals.

The group B tournament took place from April 14th to 20th, 2018 in Granada , Spain . The games took place in the 400-seat Igloo Arena . A total of 2,565 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 171 per game.

The hosts, Spain , managed to immediately return to the A group with five wins from five games. But New Zealand proved to be a serious opponent until the final day, when the two faced each other in a direct duel, while the other four teams lost their performance. Both Spain and New Zealand went into the last tournament game without losing points, which the Iberians finally won 6: 4 and thus secured the tournament victory. Newcomer Luxembourg had to relegate immediately to Division III despite a 2-1 win in the last game against North Korea , as the Letzeburgers performed worst in a three-way comparison of the tied teams from Luxembourg, Mexico and North Korea.

The Division III tournament was held from April 16-22, 2018 in the South African metropolis of Cape Town . The games took place in the 2,800 seat Grand West Ice Station . A total of 2,225 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 148 per game.

The Georgian team achieved promotion to Group B of Division II for the first time since their entry into the World Cup in 2013. Georgia prevailed despite an intermittent 2: 4 defeat against host South Africa against Bulgaria and last year's relegated Turkey , which on the other Places followed. The Georgians won the direct duels against Bulgaria and Turkey on the first two match days and thus laid the foundation for the tournament's success. The team from Hong Kong had to accept relegation to qualification for Division III , losing all five games and only scoring three goals. The host South Africa was able to avert relegation with a final success over the Asians.
