Liam Kirk (born January 3, 2000 in Maltby , England ) is a British ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League since 2018 .

Career

Originally from the small town of Maltby in South Yorkshire , Liam Kirk began his career in nearby Sheffield . There he first played for various junior teams and showed himself to be an outstanding talent of his year at an early age. In 2010 and 2011 he was elected U11 All-Star of the English Ice Hockey Association . He did the same in 2012 and 2013 in the U13, 2015 in the U16 and 2016 in the U17. In addition, in 2011 (U11), 2013 (U13) and 2016 (U17) he was voted the most valuable player in the conference tournament in his age group by EIHA . With the Midlands team , he won the U17 conference in 2016 and 2017. With the Sheffield Steelhawks, his club team, he won the British U18 Championship in 2016, to which he made a significant contribution as top scorer and top scorer.

At the age of 15, he started playing for the Sheffield Spartans in the National Ice Hockey League , the third highest division in the UK, and with the Sheffield Steeldogs in the English Premier Ice Hockey League , the second highest division, in the 2015/16 season . In the following year he was also used by Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League , the highest British league, but played mostly for the Steeldogs. After playing exclusively for the Steelers in 2017/18, he was selected in the CHL Import Draft by the Peterborough Petes from the Ontario Hockey League in the first round in 2018 as the ninth player and then moved to Canada. In addition, he was selected in the seventh round as a total of 189 players in the NHL Entry Draft by the Arizona Coyotes , who thus secured a right to a later commitment. Kirk is the first England-born and trained player to be drafted by the National Hockey League .

International

In the junior division, Kirk first played for Great Britain at the U18 World Championships in 2016 , 2017 and 2018 in Division II. With the British U20 selection , he took part in the World Cup in Division I in 2017 and in 2018 when he was the top scorer, top scorer and (together with the Estonian Andre Linde and the South Korean Pang Mingyu ) best preparer was also chosen as the best striker of the tournament, took part in the title fights of Division II.

With the British men's national team , he took part in the 2018 World Cup for the first time, when the British returned to the top division for the first time since relegation in the 1994 world championships.
