The 18th ice hockey world championships of the U18 juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2016 in the age group of under-eighteen year olds (U18). A total of 43 national teams took part in the seven tournaments of the top division and divisions I to III between February 14 and April 24, 2016 .
For the third time, the world champion was the Finnish team, which Swedes were able to defeat 6-1 in the purely Scandinavian final. It was the Finns' first title win since the 2000 World Cup , while it was their fifth loss in the final for the Swedes. Third place went to the series world champion from the United States, who missed the final for the first time since the 2008 World Cup . The German team narrowly missed promotion to the top division by finishing second in Group A of Division I. The Swiss team finished the tournament in eighth place. Austria rose in Group A of Division I by placing sixth immediately back down to Group B.

The U18 World Championship was held from April 14 to 24, 2016 in the US city of Grand Forks in the state of North Dakota . The game was played in the Ralph Engelstad Arena (11,643 seats) and the Purpur Arena with 5,400 seats.
Ten national teams took part in the tournament, playing in two groups of five teams each. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams at the 2015 World Cup according to the following key:
Group A | Group B |
USA (1) | Finland (2) |
Switzerland (4) | Canada (3) |
Russia (5) | Czech Republic (6) |
Sweden (8) | Slovakia (7) |
Latvia (9) | Denmark (11) |
Two weeks before the tournament, the majority of the players in the Russian team tested positive for meldonium , which had been on the doping list of the World Anti-Doping Agency since January 1, 2016 . The team was then almost completely replaced by the Russian U17 team under coach Sergei Golubowitsch .
mode
A new game mode was decided for the 2013 World Cup. After the group matches in the preliminary round, the four best in the group qualify for the quarter-finals. The two fifths of the group games contest the relegation round in the " best-of-three " mode and determine who was relegated to Division IA. The placement games for seventh and fifth place are still canceled.
