Timothy Liljegren (born April 30, 1999 in Kristianstad ) is a Swedish - American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League since July 2017 and for their farm team, the Toronto Marlies , in the American Hockey League is used.
Career
Timothy Liljegren started his career in his hometown at Kristianstads IK . In 2013 he moved to Rögle BK and played for the local youth teams. It was first used in the J20 SuperElit in 2015 . On December 3, 2015, at the age of 16, he made his debut in the Svenska Hockeyligan and was able to achieve an assist. On February 24, 2016, he scored his first goal in the game against Linköpings HC . In total, he played 19 games in his first season in Sweden's top division and then extended his contract by two years. In the 2016/17 season, the defender was mainly used for the men for the first time; He also played briefly on loan at Timrå IK in the second-rate Allsvenskan .
In the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in 17th position by the Toronto Maple Leafs , who provided him with an entry-level contract a few weeks later . As part of the preparation for the 2017/18 season, the Maple Leafs gave the defender to their farm team , the Toronto Marlies from the American Hockey League (AHL). With the Marlies he won the Calder Cup at the end of the season .
After about two and a half years in the AHL, Liljegren was appointed to the Maple Leafs squad for the first time in mid-January 2020 and made her debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) a little later .
International
Liljegren played his first international tournament for Sweden at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2015 . In April 2016 he won the silver medal with Sweden at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2016 and in January 2018 at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2018 .
