Danton Edward Cole (born January 10, 1967 in Pontiac , Michigan ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach , who worked for the Winnipeg Jets , Tampa Bay Lightning , New Jersey Devils , New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League , as well as the Krefeld Pinguine in the German Ice Hockey League . He has been the head coach of the Michigan State University team since 2017 .

Career

Danton Cole began his career as a hockey player with the Aurora Tigers, for which he was active in the 1984/85 season in the Ontario Junior Hockey League . He was then selected in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round as the 123rd player of the Winnipeg Jets . First, however, the winger attended Michigan State University for four years and played for their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this period, he won the NCAA championship with his university team in 1986, and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship in 1987 and 1989 .

From 1989 to 1992 Cole played for the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League , but was almost exclusively for the Moncton Hawks from the American Hockey League in his rookie year . Then he was under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning for two and a half years , before he was given in the 1994/95 season shortly before the end of the trade deadline together with Shawn Chambers in exchange for Alexander Semak and Ben Hankinson to the New Jersey Devils , with whom he won the prestigious Stanley Cup in the playoffs . During the following season , the former national player changed clubs several times and played for the Indianapolis Ice and Utah Grizzlies in the International Hockey League , as well as the New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL.

The 1996/97 season began Cole with the Krefeld Penguins in the German Ice Hockey League . After 28 games in which he had scored seven goals and given twelve assists, however, he returned to North America and played until the end of his career following the 1999/2000 season at the age of 33 for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the IHL. He started his coaching career with the Griffins in his last playing season and was also assistant coach. In the same role he worked for the Griffins in the 2000/01 season. With the Muskegon Fury from the United Hockey League , he won the Colonial Cup in the 2001/02 season, his first as head coach . He then returned to the Griffins, who had meanwhile changed to the American Hockey League. During the 2004/05 season he was replaced there by Greg Ireland . Across the seasons he was then responsible for the Motor City Mechanics from the UHL for almost a year .

During the 2006/07 season, Cole was an assistant coach at Bowling Green State University . He was then head coach of the University of Alabama in Huntsville for three years . From 2010 to 2017, the former NHL player headed the U17 team of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program . He then took over the position of head coach at Michigan State University .

International

For the USA , Cole took part in the 1990 , 1991 and 1994 World Championships . He scored nine goals in 25 international matches and provided six templates.
