The International Hockey League ( IHL for short , formerly Colonial Hockey League , CoHL for short and United Hockey League , UHL for short ) was a professional ice hockey league that consisted of teams from the United States . The league headquarters was in Rochester , Michigan . The league called itself a mid-level minor league , but was officially classified as a low-level league.

history

The league was founded in 1991 under the name Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) with teams from Brantford , Detroit , Flint , St. Thomas and Thunder Bay . The league changed its name to the United Hockey League (UHL) before the 1997/98 season . Over the years, the participating teams in the league changed frequently.

The 2006/07 season started the league with ten teams. After this season, the league was reduced to six teams, as the Port Huron Flags , the Chicago Hounds , the Quad City Mallards and the Rockford IceHogs stopped playing and the Elmira Jackals moved to the ECHL . As a new franchise were Port Huron Icehawks added.

In the summer of 2007, the league changed its name to the International Hockey League (IHL), based on the league of the same name , which existed from 1945 to 2001 and had teams from Flint , Fort Wayne , Kalamazoo and Muskegon in its early days . Three of the current teams come from these cities. On June 1, 2010, the league together with the Central Hockey League announced their cooperation from the 2010/11 season. The five IHL teams switched to the CHL this season, but the IHL officially remained as an organizing committee.
