Rochester [ ˈɹɑːtʃɪstɚ ] is a city in the southeast of the US state Michigan . This is in the north of the USA on the border with Canada . In 2000 Rochester had 10,467 inhabitants.
geography
Rochester is close to the western shores of Lake Erie and close to the border with Detroit , to whose metropolitan area the city belongs. Rochester is part of Oakland County , one of the wealthiest counties in the world. It is located on the so-called "Automation Alley", an area that owes its name to a cluster of company headquarters whose products are high technology . Nevertheless, Rochester is located in a scenic area.
Culture and sights
history
The first settlement by settlers of European descent in the region of Oakland County took place on March 17, 1817 by James Graham and his family in the area of what is now Rochester. This event is celebrated annually in Rochester today with the Founders Day Celebration .
education
Rochester is home to Oakland University , which opened in 1959. In addition, the largest "law school" (equivalent to a law school ) in the USA has a campus in Rochester; the private Thomas M. Cooley Law School from Lansing, the capital of Michigan, which is the only one not affiliated to a university . Rochester College is in the neighboring town of Rochester Hills .
The Rochester School District , administrated in the City of Rochester, includes Rochester Hills, Rochester, and the Charter Township of Oakland. It includes three public high schools , five public middle schools , fifteen elementary schools (two of which are in Rochester itself) and eight private schools, mostly religious. Four of the private schools are located in the actual city of Rochester, one of which is a Montessori school.
Museums, theaters and other cultural institutions
Meadow Brook Hall is a museum located in a large garden, which illustrates the historical building and living style of the region. It is the fourth largest museum of its kind in the United States. Built from 1926 to 1929, it was originally the residence of Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of Dodge's founder , John Francis Dodge . The nearby Rochester Hill Museum at Van Hoosen Farm deals with the history of Rochester and Oakland counties.
Founded in 1967, the Meadow Brook Theater is located on the Oakland University campus and is the largest professional, non-profit theater in Michigan. It also includes internationally known artists. A symphony orchestra has also been part of the city's cultural offerings since 1961. Rochester also has a professional music school.
Rochester is home to an internationally renowned school for training guide dogs .
The city has seven different parks with different designs and uses as well as diverse sports facilities. The Rochester Community House was built in Rochester Municipal Park . It serves as a meeting point for all kinds of clubs and offers space for private and public events. The Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve has an award-winning information center.
At the old, hydro-powered Yates Cider Mill, there is a traditional apple cider farm with sightseeing opportunities and a supporting program.

- Madonna spent part of her childhood in Rochester. She graduated from Rochester Adams High School in 1976 .
- Dita Von Teese , a well-known burlesque dancer and ex-wife of Marilyn Manson , was born in Rochester in 1972 and stayed there until she was twelve.

- Serial killer Aileen Wuornos , executed in 2002, was born in Rochester in 1956 and grew up there.

- Ice hockey player Jacob Trouba , who was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and is now under contract with the New York Rangers , was born in Rochester in 1994.
