Clarkston , officially City of the Village of Clarkston , is a city in Oakland County in the southeast of the US state Michigan . In 2000 Clarkston had 962 residents; by 2009 the population had decreased to 917.

The area of ​​the city is 1.3 km², of which 1.2 km² is land. The population density is 808 inhabitants per km². Clarkston is on the northern edge of Metro Detroit , in the center of Independence Township . The small town is the economic and social center of the much larger township, and many citizens say they live in Clarkston even if they don't live in the city itself.

Clarkston is 41 miles northwest of downtown Detroit . Other major cities in the Clarkston area include Flint (45.3 km northwest), Michigan's capital Lansing (109 km west) and Ann Arbor (77.1 km south-southwest).

The official census in 2000 identified 962 residents. These lived in 406 households; including 265 families. The population density was 808 per km². 424 residential units were recorded in the village. Among the population, 96.8% were white and 1.0% from other races; 2.2% said they belonged to several ethnic groups.

The population was distributed among 25.7% under 18 years of age, 5.3% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7% between 25 and 44 years of age, 28.0% between 45 and 64 years of age and 13.4% between 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years, well above the US average of 35 years.
