According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 81.1 km², of which 78.9 km² is land and 2.2 km² (= 2.74%) is water. Walled Lake, which is mostly within the city, is the largest lake in the city. The Middle Branch of the Rouge River has its origin in it . Shawood Lake is south of it. Several smaller lakes lie within the city. They were created through opencast mining of gravel or were created artificially as rain retention basins . Most of the city is in the catchment area of the Rouge River, but a small part drains into the Huron River .

The small community-free part of Novi Township is located in the southern part of Novis, almost on the city limits to the City of Northville.

There is a motorway junction on the eastern edge of Novis . This is where Interstate 96 coming from the west turns south and overlaps with Interstate 275 coming from the north . Interstate 96 continues eastwards, while Michigan State Route 5 joins I-275 from the north and then passes through Farmington Hills in a southeasterly direction.

history

Efforts to give Novi City status go back to 1959, but citizens' votes failed in 1959 and 1962. Finally, another vote in May 1968 was successful and in 1969 Novi was finally incorporated as City .

However, the history of Novis goes back to the 1830s. A path already existed during the time of the Indian colonization , which was initially extended to a dirt road in the 1830s. The route was soon expanded with wooden planks by a private company, between Detroit and Farmington in 1836 and finally to Lansing in 1851. The Grand River Road was profitable as a toll road as long as there was a stagecoach connection between Detroit and Lansing. When the railways became the main mode of transport after the Civil War , the road was neglected. The rise of automobile traffic in the first half of the 19th century led to the expansion of the road network in Michigan as well, with the road through Novi becoming part of US Highway 16 . Between 1956 and 1957, the section between Farmington and Brighton was rebuilt as a motorway and later incorporated into the interstate highway system as Interstate 96.

After the Second World War, Novi began to grow in population, industry and trade, which has not stopped to this day. The construction of the Twelve Oaks Mall in the 1970s contributed to this.

Historic sites

The farm of Jacob and Rebecca Fuerst was in Michigan as historically recognized building in the National Register of Historic Places entered, but the city council had in 2008 to tear down the building.

Other historic structures include Colonel Samuel White Homestead and the Novi Depot, which was part of the original railroad facility from 1871 and was part of the Holly, Wayne and Monroe Railroad .
