The Seckbacher Ried is a seven hectare nature reserve in Frankfurt am Main - Seckbach . The wetland with soft wood alluvial forest is the silted up remnant of an oxbow lake of the Main , which created the adjacent Berger Ridge . It has been designated as a nature reserve since 1937. Before that it was an open pasture landscape. The Seckbach nature conservation group in the BUND offers regular expert tours .

Characteristic

The reed, 98.5 meters above sea level , got its name from its proximity to the Frankfurt district of Seckbach . The Mühlbach, a confluence of several sources rising 135 meters above sea level on the Lohrberg in Seckbach, flows into the Seckbacher Ried after about a kilometer of mostly piped creek and provides the necessary moisture for the area. The place name Seckbach ( Seckibah ) means seepage water. It is based on the origin of the sources on the Lohrberg.

The Riedgraben stream coming from Bischofsheim is called Entengraben or Entenbach in the Frankfurt area. It flows through the Seckbacher Ried before it is canalized at the Hallgarten School on Bornheimer Hang in the Bornheim district and directed into the pond in the Ostpark .

To the north, the reed merges into numerous allotment gardens . In the south it borders on the industrial area of the Seckbacher Niederung.

A special feature of the Seckbacher Ried is the natural forest of silver willows ( Salix alba ) that has developed since it was designated as a nature reserve . Very old willows are in the range of the Volt sea route. Reed beds and wet meadows provide habitat for the crested newt ( Triturus cristatus ), the hermit or Russian beetle ( Osmoderma eremita ) and the bellied diaper snail ( Vertigo moulinsiana ).

Every February, the Seckbach nature conservation group in the BUND collects waste that has been disposed of over the fences by less nature-loving fellow citizens. In summer the reed is almost impenetrable and therefore difficult to see.

history

About half of the area has not been mowed since the 1940s. This gave nature a chance to recapture this area. In the course of a night bombing raid on the northeast of Frankfurt during the air raids on Frankfurt am Main on May 13, 1941, the Seckbacher Ried was bombed. According to the police records documented at the Institute for Urban History , this resulted in minor damage to the land .

In 1983 the city of Frankfurt pulled the emergency brake as the Seckbacher Ried continued to dry out. The Mühlbach was initiated. With the construction of the East Depot of the Frankfurt Transport Company (VGF) at the turn of the 20th to the 21st century, there was considerable interference with the Seckbacher Ried and the Erlenbruch.

From 1997 to August 2008, the remaining fat meadows in the valley were grazed by Zebu cattle from the Caucasus during the summer months . The dwarf zebus are delicately built and with their particularly delicate hooves could not destroy the sensitive, moist meadow areas. At the same time, they maintained the areas in a cost-effective way. The herd could occasionally be seen from an observation platform. Buzzards (Buteoninae), woodpeckers (Picidae), chaffinches ( Fringilla coelebs ) and many other animals can also be observed .

The Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection in Wiesbaden has applied to the EU to register the Seckbacher Ried together with adjoining areas totaling 13 hectares as Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH).
