The approximately 185 meter high Lohrberg or Lohr for short is the local mountain of Frankfurt am Main and is at the same time the only remaining vineyard within the urban area. It belongs to the Seckbach district and is part of the geological formation of the Berger Ridge , which extends in the shape of a flat U from Berkersheim to behind the end of Bergen - ending in Maintal- Bischofsheim. The highest point of the city is at the Berger Warte , 212.4 meters above sea level .

history

The name of the Lohrberg goes back to the field name Lohr, which was already documented in the Middle Ages . The derivation of this word is not clearly proven. In addition to an interpretation as pastureland, there is also an interpretation based on the Old High German term lar , which means empty or bare. Both possible interpretations, however, indicate that the Lohrberg was not forested and was probably used for agriculture.

A section of the Hohen Straße, which in turn is part of the Via Regia , runs over the Lohrberg . This is an imperial, pilgrimage and trade route between the Rhine and Wroclaw in Silesia that has been important since the Middle Ages and bears the name Hohe Straße in the Frankfurt-Leipzig section, presumably because it avoided the wetlands and marshland as much as possible so it could be used in all seasons. The Via Regia was a prehistoric connection from Spain to Russia. In what is now Frankfurt's urban area, it ran from Höchst (old Elisabethenstrasse ) over the Nidda near Nied ( Rödelheimer Strasse , now Oeserstrasse ), past Rebstock through the Biegwald ( Biegweg ), then north past Bockenheim , over the Ginnheimer Höhe ( Diebsgrundweg ), the Dornbusch ( Marbachweg ) and the Lohrberg and mountains .

The Lohrberg is indirectly named after the place Seckbach. Seckbach or the historic Seckibah stands for seepage water. The water from the Lohrberg springs seeps into the Seckbacher Ried .

The wine-growing on the slopes of the mountain Lohr occupied since the 9th century, it is discussed already in the second known today written mention Seckbachs in 882nd However, it can be assumed that viticulture on the slope used today and spoiled by the sun took place much earlier, possibly by the Romans . Archaeologists at least found the foundation walls of a Roman property, a Roman sanctuary, Roman roads and relics of a Roman giant column of Jupiter , which can be admired today in the Frankfurt Historical Museum, along with other archaeological monuments .

Already in the course of secularization , viticulture on Lohrberg passed from the property of the Frankfurt Carmelite monastery to the ownership of the city of Frankfurt. The Lohrberger Hang vineyard is managed by the City of Frankfurt am Main's winery .

After Seckbach was incorporated into Frankfurt (July 1, 1900), plans for two Seckbacher Volksparks based on the Günthersburgpark as a model were made under the horticultural director Carl Heicke and his garden architect Bernhard Rosenthal . The corresponding resolution of the city council is dated January 24, 1905. The purchase of land and expropriation proceedings took many years to complete, as the Lohrberg was divided into many small parcels, as illustrated by a plan by the Frankfurt civil engineering office from 1906.

This plan and an undated historical photo show the Lohrhaus as the only building on the Lohrberg, a two-storey half - timbered house with a converted roof. It was probably built in 1763 and renovated in 1933. Today it is part of the Lohrberg-Schänke garden restaurant, which the city of Frankfurt leased to the Pflug family from 1933. At the time the Lohrpark was set up, the Quanz family from Seckbach lived in the Lohrhaus, with many children and sold refreshments to walkers and hikers passing by. Since the house on the Lohrberg had no connection to drinking water, this, along with other food and materials, had to be transported by the family to the Lohrberg by donkey.

After the realization of the first of these two parks between 1910 and 1913, the Volkspark Auf dem Huth , named after a field name, the first permanent allotment garden colony in Frankfurt with 60 allotments was established in 1919 under the aegis of Horticultural Director Max Bromme and Lord Mayor Franz Adickes on the Lohrberg created for the population. This decision is more recent than the planning of the Volkspark Auf dem Lohrberg, because the 1914 plans did not include allotment gardens. Also in 1919 took place on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds from 13. – 21. September the exhibition courtyard and garden to promote allotment gardening takes place. In 1924 the work on the new Volkspark on the Lohrberg, delayed by the First World War (1914-1918) and inflation (1914-1923), and the integration of a vineyard began.

In the 1930s there were plans to dismantle the Röderbergturm, a wooden observation tower, built in 1871, in the Ostend and to rebuild it on the Lohrberg, as there is a much better panoramic view. The move plan was not implemented, however, and the Röderberg tower was demolished in 1936.

At the end of the 1920s, the so-called children's recreation garden was completed in Lohrpark. It includes a 100 square meter water play pool, a sandpit and play equipment, a sunbathing area, a play area and benches. In 1930, a memorial was erected in Lohrpark for those who died in Seckbach in the First World War. It covers an area of 5 × 10 meters, with an inner courtyard and a 5-meter high wooden cross facing Seckbach.

The Lohrbergschänke garden restaurant, planned from 1919 onwards, cannot be opened until June 1933 in the style of the 1920s. The innkeepers in Seckbach had opposed the unpleasant competition in such a prominent position. In World War II Lohrpark or Lohrberg received in the air raids on Frankfurt in 1943 bombs strike, large bomb craters were, for example, in the middle of today's toboggan run . The lawns were partly used for other purposes during and after the war, for example for growing vegetables and medicinal herbs .

In 1947 the example and advice garden for fruit-growing citizens was created. In 1951 the first Lohrbergfest, a purely athletic sporting event, took place on the large, two-part, flat lawn of the Lohrberg. In 1953, the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn monument in Frankfurt was erected there and inaugurated by Mayor Walter Kolb .

In 1961 a mini golf course was opened , but it was leveled again in 1966 due to insufficient demand.

Under the number 06 112 000/1, the Lohrberger Hang vineyard area was registered in 1971 as the smallest and most easterly individual location in the Rheingau wine-growing region in the Weinbergrolle .

In the mid-1970s, green plastic modules were laid out on the slope, which was used as a toboggan run in winter when there was snow, in order to offer skiers suitable practice areas on the lawn in summer without affecting it too much. The departure of the active caused a corresponding background noise and was not appreciated by walkers looking for relaxation. The experiment was discontinued. In 1975 the 25th anniversary of the Lohrberg Festival took place.

Visible slope movement on the walls of the path between the vines

In 1990 the city survey office published height measurements for the past twelve years. They showed that the Lohrberg slides one centimeter per year. Movements of the enclosing walls have been observed on the way between the vines for decades (see photo on the right). This finding is not new, however, because Seckbach's chronicle reports on it from earlier centuries. At that time there was even at least one major landslide.

In 1993 the city administration rededicated the memorial built in 1930 for the Seckbach's fallen in World War I; Since then, the victims of the Second World War from Seckbach have been commemorated there. The city of Frankfurt managed the viticulture on the Lohrberger Hang itself until 1994 , since then it has been leased to a winemaker in Hochheim am Main, who also looks after the local viticulture in Frankfurt.

In the mid-1990s, an open-air cinema on the Lohrberg came up and was temporarily realized by Mal Seh'n Kino, with the simplest technology, an unusual film program and free admission.

In 2000 , the 50th anniversary of the Lohrberg Festival was celebrated on the large playground, the heart of the Lohrpark, which has served as a competition area for the Frankfurt Mountain Sports Festival once a year since 1951 .

The Quellenwanderweg in Frankfurt's green belt , which runs between the Alteborn in Seckbach and the Schelmenborn in Bergen-Enkheim on the southern slope of the Lohrberg, was established in 2001.

Since 2004, private park rangers have been used in Lohrpark to protect the preservation of the green spaces and to take preventive action against pollution of the facilities by users of the park.

In 2005, the Streuobstzentrum association, founded in 2003 to protect the orchards in the Frankfurt area, took over the sponsorship of the municipal advisory garden on Lohrberg, which had already been threatened with closure twice. He maintains the newly built environmental educational Main-Äppel-Haus Lohrberg with Äppel-Bistro and has therefore been renamed MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg Streuobstzentrum e. V. renamed.

archeology

During excavations by the Senckenberg Natural Research Society (since November 2008: Senckenberg Society for Natural Research ) at the end of the 19th century, the remains of a fossil mammal were discovered at the foot of the Lohrberg . The animal was described as the size of a large ox . Prof. Friedrich Kinkelin, then sectionary of the geological-palaeonthological department of the Senckenberg Museum , assigned the finds to the genus of the river pig and described them as a new species, which he named Hippopothamus seckbachensis after the place where it was found . However, this designation was revised again when teeth of this animal were found. The first class assignment can no longer be maintained. The animal was given the new name Anthracotherium seckbachense , Seckbacher Kohletier. The Seckbacher vernacular is not that formal and quickly renames it to Seckbacher Kohlensau. In its size, the animal corresponds to a hippopotamus . The relation to coal results from the fact that coal was once mined underground near the Lohrberge and the relics of the animal are located in the mine shafts at a depth of around 17 meters .

Lohrberg poem

View from Friedberger Landstrasse to Lohrberg

When I stand on the Lohrberg
and let my eyes wander,
look into the distance and into the vicinity
, I can already understand
that this is definitely
one of the most beautiful spots in Frankfurt .

Anyone who thinks that Äppelwoi is
only dying for me is just screaming ,
try the Lohrberg
wine , the Schnut will be a real treat!
To the south there are vines on the slope,
as you can see in the picture.

Un look at the tree branches,
what do you say hello ? Seckbach is at
your
feet as much as a cozy nest .
The tree blossom, it is not measured, you
can forget the Bergstrasse!

Mei Lohrberg-Loblied, believe me,
it would not end yet.
We still need a lot of time to think
about everything.
Why am I so happy here?
The best thing is to go there yourself.

Author unknown; the poem is probably in the context of a picture of the Lohrberg, 20th century.

characterization

Lohrberg and Lohrpark are part of the current Frankfurt green belt planning and serve the city as an important cold and fresh air area. The park is therefore a valuable component of an overall ecological concept to protect nature.

The Lohrberg can be reached via various, mostly relatively steep, walking paths from the center of Seckbach. There is only a slight incline for walkers from Bergen. By car you can get to the Friedberger Landstrasse in the direction of Bad Vilbel and the Berger Weg. Parking spaces are available on the Lohrberg.

The heart of the Lohrpark is a large, flat lawn, which is bordered by a walkway and trees. The Friedrich-Heyer-Weg, which begins at the parking lot, crosses this lawn and divides it so that the walking paths there are shaped like an eight. The Friedrich Ludwig Jahn monument in Frankfurt has been located here between the shady trees since May 31, 1953 . The Friedrich-Heyer-Weg begins at the parking lot and forms the central axis of the Lohrpark in a straight line. At the end of the building, it leads into a large, shady rotunda built at seat height, which is overgrown with large trees. The arrangement of these trees follows the shape of the rotunda.

The Lohrpark offers, among other things, the Lohrberg-Schänke, a Frankfurt excursion restaurant that has been popular since the 1930s, the children's recreation garden with a children's playground, a rectangular water play pool with partly sunny and partly shady lawns, numerous walking and cycling paths and lawns for play and sport. On the promenade near the paddling pool there is a round wooden shelter and a small rotunda built at seat height with a single tree in the center, from which one can look down on the Lohrberger slope vineyard and into the distance. The wooden shelter with benches has been structurally changed over time. It used to have three partitions, each with an oval opening to look into the next compartment. This was an attractive plus, especially for children, families and lovers, which one has to do without today. Between the shelter and the small rotunda, a path interrupted by steps leads through the vineyard. This path is closed in late summer when the grapes are ripe and the berry picking is imminent, but also in winter because of its slope when there is a risk of black ice. The vineyard can be viewed both from above and below from walking paths. A brick memorial for the fallen of Seckbach has an inner courtyard in which the names of the victims of the First World War are documented. Another plaque commemorates those who died in the Second World War .

The walking paths in the Lohrpark are partly asphalted, partly strewn with sand. Most of them are flat and are therefore also suitable for the elderly and people with reduced mobility. The walking paths up the Lohrberg are naturally relatively steep. From the parking lot, however, you can get through the Lohrpark and all attractions on level paths. A large number of benches throughout the Lohrpark invites you to linger, sunbathe and take a look into the distance.

From the Lohrpark you have an attractive panoramic view of Seckbach from various locations, over the vastness of the Main Plain to the mountains of the Spessart , the mountain ranges of the Odenwald . Of course, you can also see some of the Frankfurt skyscrapers , as well as the fireworks of the Dippemess , which take place on the square at the ice rink opposite the Ostpark . The altitude is particularly suitable for flying kites in autumn. In winter, the Lohrpark offers Frankfurt's longest toboggan run when it is snowing . For generations, Seckbach children have been looking for Easter eggs on the morning of Easter Sunday on the Lohrberg. There are numerous easy to difficult hiding spots.

Animal observations are possible on the Lohrberg, because many birds and squirrels are constantly looking for berries , seeds and insects . Rabbits and foxes are also on the move, benefiting from the nearby fields . Joggers , Nordic walkers , cyclists, strollers, ball athletes, sun-seekers and those looking for relaxation get their money's worth and find many benches. If the weather is suitable, you can grill on equipment you have brought with you on a designated lawn. For children and animals, however, the rubbish that visitors often leave behind in the green areas and on the paths as well as the sometimes overfilled waste bins are problematic. Dog owners and dogs have been thought of, a gas bag station is available, as is a water pump. Public toilets are located in an outbuilding of the Lohrbergschänke. The MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg with the attached garden is an environmental educational advice center.

swell

The springs arising on the Lohrberg are due to rainwater that penetrates the ground and initially seeps away. The water accumulates above underground clay layers in sandy marl layers , which serve as filters and reservoirs. Both layers are inclined towards the slope of the Lohrberg in such a way that excess amounts of water emerge as springs. The place or district owes its name to the sources and their origins. Seckibah = seepage water.

A special feature of the Lohrberg springs is the formation of sinter , a crust-like precipitate of a gravelly and calcareous nature. They arise from the disintegration of water-soluble compounds and the carbon dioxide escaping from the spring water. The cause is the changing ambient pressure and the changing ambient temperature when the groundwater escapes to the earth's surface. The water-soluble components are deposited in the form of sintering at the bottom of the source.

Due to the confluence of the sources Bachgrund, Pfingstgetrieschen, Pfingstlohr and Wüst, as well as the ditches of the Lohrberg, the Mühlbach is created on its western slope at 135 meters above sea level at the level of the Am Lohrberg street. Until the end of the 19th century, the Mühlbach drove the Seckbach watermill, the millstones of which can still be seen in front of the Im Mühlchen house at 16 Hintergasse. For this purpose, the Mühlbach was dammed into several ponds behind the Seckbacher Mühle on the slope of the Lohrberg. These were drained to operate the mill. Today, the approximately one kilometer long Mühlbach is mostly piped and has fed the Seckbacher Ried nature reserve since 1990 . To the north of the Seckbach development, however, it is clearly visible in its old bed. Also on the property at Alsfelder Strasse 2 / corner of Hintergasse, under two beech trees, you can take a look at the water and hear the rush of the belly run called Draisborngraben. The Draisborn flows into the Mühlbach nearby.

The pumping station of the Seckbach waterworks, which was built in 1897 and used two source groups of Seckbach, once stood at Alsfelder Straße 23. Opposite in the front garden of the property at Alsfelder Straße 12 you can still see the location of the former shaft for the spring water inflow from Draisborn, Pfingstlohr and Wüst. The pumping station transported the water into the main collecting tank in the street Am Pfingstlohr am Lohrberg. The Klingenborn on the east side of the Lohrberg rises on the Klingenweg at a height of 183.3 meters above sea level, the Klingelbach was also used by the Seckbach waterworks. Due to its high location, however, it was able to flow directly into a counter tank at the northern end of the Klingenweg on Lohrberg, which was used to supply Seckbach's east with water until 1953. The Klingelbach leads parallel to the Klingenweg piped to the Seckbacher Ried.

The Lochbrunnen is also a source whose source can no longer be clearly localized. The spring water emerges here diffusely in layers, which is noticeable through a swampy spring horizon.

The springs are stops on the six-kilometer spring hiking trail in Frankfurt's green belt , which begins at Seckbacher Alteborn (Atzelberg-Ost) and ends in Bergen.

Viticulture on the Lohrberger slope

Lohrberger Hang vineyard ( Riesling , eastern Rheingau )

The viticulture at Lohrberg occupied since the second documentary mention Seckbachs (Seckibah = leachate) in 882nd There you can read about three hubs of land with vineyards in Seckibah . However, the vineyard area used to extend significantly further, to the former embankment of tram line 32 (later 20, last 12) to Bergen.

The Lohrberger Hang vineyard in Seckbacher Lohrpark has been owned by the City of Frankfurt am Main since 1803 , although Seckbach was not incorporated into the municipality until July 1, 1900. At the beginning of the 19th century, the winery with its buildings and vineyards was secularized. It previously belonged to the Carmelite Monastery in Frankfurt . In the past, field riflemen monitored that no unauthorized persons were being amicable in the vineyard.

The Lohrberger slope forms the easternmost vineyard in the Rheingau . Every year around 10,000 bottles of Lohrberger Hang Riesling can be filled from the Riesling grapes harvested in Lohrpark . The 1.3 hectare site is slightly inclined to the south and receives a lot of sun in this way. It is managed by the city of Frankfurt am Main's winery . The wine is mostly made dry and in good years reaches late harvest and selection quality. Until 1994, the city managed the Lohrberger slope with its own resources, since then a tenant has been active. The wines of the Lohrberger slope regularly receive awards at the Hessian State Wine Awards.

The Frankfurt Lohrberger Hang Riesling is served on appropriate occasions in the Frankfurt City Hall Römer , preferably to important guests of the city. However, the wine is also freely sold in Limpurger Gasse and can be tasted there beforehand. A sign at the beginning of Limpurger Gasse with the coat of arms of the city of Frankfurt shows the way. The wine is served next door in the corner house, in the wine tavern in the Römer. However, bottled wines are also served and sold directly on the Lohrberg, for example in the Lohrberg-Schänke garden bar and in the MainÄppelHaus.

Cenotaphs

Memorial plaques and flowerbed in the courtyard of the memorial

Two memorials were erected within the Lohrpark, in 1930 the memorial for the Seckbach's fallen in World War I, which in 1993 was also dedicated to those who fell in World War II. Another monument is located directly at the venue of the annual Lohrberg Festival, the large, two-part, flat lawn in the center of the Lohrpark. The Friedrich Ludwig Jahn monument in Frankfurt has been honoring the famous gymnastics father since 1953 , bearing his name and the gymnast's cross . What is less common is that he was a member of the preliminary parliament and the Frankfurt National Assembly in the Paulskirche . In 1848 Jahn had given a speech very close by, at the Berger Warte and the Leopold Column. The memorial for Jahn was inaugurated on May 31, 1953 on the occasion of the 3rd Lohrberg Festival by Lord Mayor Walter Kolb and the Lohrberg Festival coordinator at the time, Karl Zscherneck.

Leisure gardens

The first permanent allotment garden colony of the city of Frankfurt am Main is located on the Lohrberg, which was opened in 1919, i.e. five years before the completion of the Lohrpark. The first colonists founded the Obst- und Gartenbaugenossenschaft GmbH Frankfurt in 1920. In March 1923, the city approved the funds for the construction of a second allotment garden and for the construction of access roads to Lohrpark. In the same year the allotment gardeners of Lohrberg gave their association the name Fruit and Horticultural Association Lohrberg. However, this was in 1934 in Kleingärtnerverein Lohrberg e. V. changed. In 1970 the 50th anniversary was celebrated, in 1995 the 75th anniversary. The association has been online since 2004. Today, more than 3 hectares of the Lohrberg are designated as allotment gardens.

Hiking trails

The Lohrberg is part of the 118 km long Vulkan-Steig (Vater-Bender-Weg) of the Vogelsberger Höhen-Club , a hiking trail that starts from Seckbach (1 km) over the Lohrberg (3 km) to Bergen, (15 km) over the Hohe Straße to Ostheim , (9 km) Langen-Bergheim , (7 km) Grauer Stein, (2 km) Herrnhaag , (5 km) Büdingen , (6 km) Michelau , (8 km) Wenings , (6 km) Ober -Seemen, (6 km) Volkartshain, (3 km) Hartmannshain, (4 km) Herchenhainer Höhe , (5 km) Taufstein , (1 km) Hoherodskopf , (7 km) Feldkrücker Höhe, (6 km) Ulrichstein , (10 km ) Groß-Felda , (10 km) Oberrod, (5 km) leads to Alsfeld . The Vulkan-Steig is marked by path markings, which consist of a rectangle that is horizontally divided into a red top and white bottom.

Organized hikes, which also led over the Lohrberg, were carried out by the Palatinate Forest Association and the hiking department of the Seckbach gymnastics club in 1875 .

The free green belt leisure map shows the cycle and hiking trails of the Frankfurt green belt, which also lead over the Lohrberg. Another free hiking map deals specifically with the Quellenwanderweg within the Frankfurt Green Belt . This leads to the sources on Lohrberg and Berger Hang, which, together with the Bischofsheimer Hang, is part of the largest contiguous orchard area in Hesse. Both cards can be obtained free of charge from the city of Frankfurt; the hiking map is also available for download as a PDF file.

gastronomy

Fresh Äppelwoi ( apple wine ) made from Bembel (jug) and ribs

The Lohrberg-Schänke garden restaurant, which was built according to plans from the 1920s and opened in 1933, includes the Lohrhaus, built around 1763, and is located at one of the most preferred viewpoints in the Lohrpark. In the 1950s, the bar was a meeting place for Frankfurt musicians and actors. The former landlord, Herr Pflug, particularly fondly remembers Willy Berking , the head of the Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) big band . In front of the rounded dining room there is a terrace at ground level, which is shaded by old trees and surrounded by hedges. Small meals, cakes and pies, hot and cold drinks and ice cream are offered.

The MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg has a so-called Äppel-Bistro, in which it offers specialties of the Frankfurt cuisine and serves drinks made by itself.

Information and meeting place

The area of the MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg , designed for environmental education, is based on the sample fruit orchard set up by the City of Frankfurt am Main in 1947 to advise the fruit-growing community. The MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg Streuobstzentrum e. V. is also a kind of descendant of the Seckbach fruit and horticultural association, which was founded in 1907 and dissolved in 1985. In 2003, the Streuobstzentrum association took over the sponsorship of the sample fruit plant threatened with closure. The MainÄppelHaus sees itself as an information and meeting place for everything to do with orchards and horticulture. Among other things, environmental education events, various courses, guided tours in the nature adventure garden, organic products from the affiliated farm shop, book tips, information sheets and press information are offered. Children's projects, especially for school classes and kindergartens, round off the offer with activities to experience nature.

Lohrberg Festival

The Lohrbergfest is an annual mountain sports festival for children and young people from gymnastics and sports clubs in the cities of Frankfurt am Main and Bad Vilbel ( Wetteraukreis ), which took place for the first time in 1951 on the initiative of Karl Zscherneck under Mayor Walter Kolb and in consultation with the Frankfurt Sports Office and has since taken place annually attracts up to 750 participants and hundreds of onlookers to Frankfurt's house and vineyard.

Mayor Kolb commissioned the Seckbach gymnastics club in 1875 with the annual organization, which has been organizing the popular sports event for the Turngau Frankfurt ever since . At that time, Kolb was also chairman of the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB). Fistball tournaments are sometimes held as part of the Lohrberg Festival . More common on terrain and environment offered opportunities or in mountain gymnastics festivals competitions such as tossing the caber , fitness tests for everyone, Ger -Zielwerfen, high jump , horseshoes target throwing, club goal throw, long distance running, orienteering , Nordic walking , tug of war , Trampolining , Gymnastics , Volleyball , Hiking or an ecumenical open-air prayer, show performances and open-air concerts as a supporting program have so far remained unused. The Lohrbergfest does not offer any participation for active people who are not organized in Turngau Frankfurt, and does not offer viewers any options for their own activities.

The organizer of the Lohrbergfest with purely athletic competitions (50, 75 and 100 meter run, ball throwing, shot put , long jump , pendulum relay 4 × 100 meters) was Karl Zscherneck, who from 1960 was also chairman of TV Seckbach. The relay races are about walking prizes from the Seckbach gymnastics club, the Frankfurt Sports Office, the Seckbach workers' welfare, the Seckbach sports and culture ring, the Karl Zscherneck Memorial Prize and the Walter Kolb Memorial Prize donated by the City of Frankfurt's Magistrate. Certificates, medals on ribbon, trophies and challenge cups, and in earlier years sometimes also laurel wreaths, are presented.

Graphics: Lohrbergfest

The newly established mountain sports festival immediately follows the Frankfurt Gymnastics Festival of 1948. The idea for the Frankfurt Mountaineering Festival , the only one within the urban area of Frankfurt am Main, is based on the earlier presence of gymnastics father Friedrich Ludwig Jahn , who on June 4, 1848 the eastern part of the Lohrberg, in the immediate vicinity of the Berger Warte and the Leopold Column in the Seckbacher district, gave a speech to gymnasts . In addition, they wanted to create a smaller counterpart on Frankfurt soil for the Feldbergfest that has been taking place since 1844 , the first ever German mountaineering festival . Hesse is the nucleus of the mountain sports festivals, most of the mountain sports festivals still take place in this state, as can be seen from the red color of the gymnast's cross on a white background.

After the Second World War , the Lohrbergfest marked an incentive for free sporting activities in the reactivated gymnastics and sports clubs in the largely destroyed city on the Main. Many children and adolescents of the time grew up without a full family, some were half or even full orphans. Sports events like this also serve an important social purpose, as the formed teams, along with coaches and supervisors, often become a kind of surrogate family. At the same time, the Frankfurt Mountain Sports Festival creates a springtime atmosphere of optimism.

On May 31, 1953, on the occasion of the 3rd Lohrberg Festival, Mayor Kolb and Karl Zscherneck inaugurated the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn monument in Frankfurt in honor of the gymnastics father. It is right next to the large competition area. In 1975 the 25th anniversary of the Lohrberg Festival was celebrated, in the same year the 100th anniversary of the organizer, the Seckbach gymnastics club.

The year 2000 marked the 50th anniversary of the Frankfurt Mountain Sports Festival, but an anniversary festival was not published, there was no major media response, and the number of participants fell by more than sixty percent. In order to perform this athletics event adequately one still relies on many volunteers, so-called volunteers ( Engl. ). In addition, some major sponsors such as Fraport and Mainova have recently been found to support the popular sports event for Frankfurt children and young people.

A children's afternoon has recently been offered as part of the Lohrbergfest's supporting program, with a climbing wall in different child-friendly levels of difficulty, inline skating , baseball , an ultimate target throwing course and other small attractions. Children and young people who do not belong to any association and do not have to be registered for the Lohrbergfest can now also take part. The Lohrbergfest takes place every May . In the event of adverse weather conditions, an alternative date in September is relevant. In 2010 was the 60th anniversary of the Lohrberg Festival.

planning

The city is planning to connect the Huthpark and the Lohrpark on the Lohrberg in the north-west of Seckbach by developing another park, the so-called Wiesenpark. Based on the rare mix of uses and the fragmented nature of the area, a park-like landscape is to be created that offers space for various usage requirements. At the same time, however, these different demands provide material for discussion and corresponding differences.

Transport links

There are access options by motor vehicle either from Wilhelmshöher Straße or via Friedberger Landstraße (towards Bad Vilbel ) and Berger Weg to the Lohrberg and to the Lohrpark car park. Departure by car is only permitted via Berger Weg to Friedberger Landstrasse or Nussgartenstrasse. With the local public transport (ÖPNV) you can take the RMV bus line 43 to the Budge-Altenheim stop. From there it is about a 10-minute uphill walk to Lohrpark. Alternatively, you can use bus line 30 to the Heiligenstock stop. From there it is about 10 minutes to walk to Lohrpark on a mostly flat route along the Berger Weg lined with fields and allotment gardens. From April 23, 2011 the “Lohrbergbus” was offered for the first time, which ran every hour from Friedberger Platz to the Lohrberg car park on weekends. However, this was only a two-year trial run that was not extended for cost reasons. This transport connection has not been available since spring 2013. From March 30, 2018, the Lohrberg bus with the number 83 will run again on weekends and on public holidays every 30 minutes from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. from the Friedberger Warte on the Lohrberg.
