The MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg Streuobstzentrum eV operates an environmental educational information and meeting place with a nature adventure garden in Frankfurt am Main am Lohrberg in the Seckbach district . The name of the facility stands for "Äppel" as a New Hessian expression for apples from the Main . Side arms of the river used to reach up to the foot of the Berger Ridge , on which the Lohrberg is also located.

characterization

The Main-Äppel-Haus Lohrberg offers information and a place to meet and exchange ideas on the topics of orchards and horticulture . Among other things, environmental education events, various courses, guided tours, excursions, organic products from the affiliated farm shop, book tips, information sheets and press information are offered. Separate seminar rooms with lecture technology are available. Children's projects, especially for school classes and kindergartens, round off the offer with nature adventure activities.

Nature adventure garden

The approximately 2-hectare advisory garden is looked after by gardeners who answer questions about soil maintenance, fruit and vegetable cultivation and species and plant protection. External groups are allowed to design thematically structured flower beds themselves every year.

Learning station in the Frankfurt green belt

The Main-Äppel-Haus has been expanded as one of several learning stations within the Frankfurt green belt . Behind this is the effort to help the traditional orchards of the region to new supporters and sponsors. Children are therefore offered various events as part of the city's “Discover, Research and Learn in the Green Belt” program. Girls and boys who should discover the Frankfurt green armadillo in the fruit trees can earn a green armadillo collection picture by sighting three specimens. Together with four other collective pictures from the other learning stations of the green belt or from corresponding events, you can stick them in a green belt collection point pass and thus acquire the so-called green belt animal diploma.

gastronomy

The Main-Äppel-Haus Lohrberg offers the so-called Äppel-Bistro, in which it offers small, cold dishes from the Frankfurt kitchen and serves homemade “ Ebbelwoi ” and juice from its own cultivation. The Seckbacher Riesling from the Lohrberger Hang is also in the bar, which the city of Frankfurt or its representatives are offering to international guests of the city and presented as a gift.

Farm shop

The farm shop of the Main-Äppel-Haus Lohrberg, which is attached to the advisory garden, offers organic products from its own production. Information is provided about the suitability of around 20 different apple varieties for compotes, cakes or as dessert fruit.

Landscape projects (excerpt)

The operating association carries out various projects in the orchards for landscape maintenance and protection, partly with the support of the German Federal Environment Foundation and the Institute for Animal Ecology and Nature Education.

history

The area of the MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg, designed for environmental education, is based on the example and advisory system set up by the City of Frankfurt am Main in 1946/47 as an information center for fruit-growing citizens. Particularly in the post-war years, a particular demand developed, if only because of the generally devastating supply situation. From the 1960s, however, interest gradually waned. The Streuobstzentrum association was founded in 2003 and, in 2005, took over the sponsorship of the sample and advisory facility that was repeatedly threatened with closure. The MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg Streuobstzentrum eV is at the same time a kind of descendant of the Seckbach fruit and horticultural association , which was founded in 1907 and dissolved in 1985 and which already operated an experimental fruit growing facility for research purposes.

Historical documents show that the Lohrberg and other parts of the Berger Ridge used to be used primarily for viticulture . There are still some old vines in the landscape, regardless of the viticulture that is still practiced today on the Lohrberger slope by the winery of the city of Frankfurt am Main or its leaseholders. More recently, however, viticulture has been pushed back in favor of fruit growing.

location

The Main-Äppel-Haus Lohrberg is located within the Frankfurt district of Seckbach on the southeastern slope of the Lohrberg.

Initiators

The Main-Äppel-Haus Lohrberg Streuobstzentrum eV in Frankfurt was founded by the Main-Kinzig Landscape Management Association, the Bergen-Enkheim Fruit and Horticultural Association and the Frankfurt Zoological Society (ZGF) in order to permanently protect the orchard belt in the greater Frankfurt area and in particular in Bergen-Enkheim to be preserved through moderate and sustainable use. A maintenance concept identified immediate measures and permanent maintenance measures. Furthermore, species protection concepts were placed in the center of nature conservation measures. The aim was and is to enable the preservation of these secondary habitats for a large number of threatened plants and animals by using the cultivated landscapes. In the meantime, the orchard protection is organized in the form of a registered association on a non-profit and voluntary basis. A marketing company was founded to finance the association's activities on a permanent basis. The proceeds from the activities of the GmbH flow entirely into the work of the association and thus contribute to the long-term security of the orchards in and around Frankfurt.
