Career

From 1993 onwards, the trained lawyer was initially Minister of Justice for two years and then Minister of the Interior of Montenegro for almost three years . As Milo Đukanović's successor , he held the post of Prime Minister from 1998 to 2002 . After an agreed exchange of the two state-highest offices Vujanović was on 25 November 2002, initially only on an interim basis, President . This was followed by two unsuccessful rounds of elections on December 22, 2002 and February 9, 2003, which failed because of the low turnout of less than 50% after large sections of the opposition called for a boycott of the elections. After a change in the electoral law with the abolition of the minimum voter turnout, Vujanović was elected the new president on May 11, 2003 with 64.2% of the votes and a turnout of 48.2%. The swearing-in took place on May 22nd. Just like his mentor Đukanović, he sought the separation of his country from the state union of Serbia and Montenegro , which took place on June 3, 2006.

On April 6, 2008, Vujanović ran again in the presidential election, the main challengers were Andrija Mandić and Nebojša Medojević . Vujanović achieved an absolute majority in the first ballot - Mandić and Medojević each achieved less than 20%. He was sworn in for the second time on May 21, 2008. For the third time, he was re-elected on April 7, 2013 and sworn in on May 21, 2013.
