The Huron River is a river in southeast Michigan that has its origin in the Huron Swamp in Indian Springs Metropark in northern Oakland County and flows from there along the border between Wayne County and Monroe County to Lake Erie .

There are 13 parks as well as wildlife and recreation areas along the river. The Huron River flows through the towns of Dexter , Ann Arbor , Ypsilanti , Belleville , Flat Rock and Rockwood .

The Huron River is a typical river in its area: sandbanks, slow flow speeds and little gradient. It has a length of 219 km. It flows through the following counties: Oakland, Livingston , Washtenaw , Wayne and Monroe.

44.3 km of the Huron River and 16.9 km of three tributaries have the status of a Country-Scenic Natural River in Michigan.

The name of the river is derived from the Hurons who used to live in this area. The river used to be part of the natives' trade routes.

There are numerous dams on the Huron River and its tributaries, 19 of them along the main river and at least 96 others in the entire catchment area. Most of them are only a few meters high and are used to regulate runoff. At least a dozen dams were built to generate electricity and drive mills. The Huron River has the following reservoirs: Kent Lake, Barton Pond, Argo Pond, Ford Lake, Belleville Lake and Flat Rock Pond.

The Huron River flows through several parks and is a well-known canoe river with mostly low flow speeds and a few easy rapids. Only the short Delhi rapids are an obstacle, which can be mastered by experienced canoeists and kayakers, provided that there is enough water.

In the river following fish are caught: rock bass , sunfish , bluegill , white perch , smallmouth bass , largemouth bass , pike , walleye , catfish , trout , muskellunge and below Belleville Dam coho salmon , chinook salmon and steelhead . Suckers and common carp are common fish in the river.
