The Saginaw Gears were an American ice hockey team from Saginaw , Michigan . The team played from 1994 to 2000 in the Colonial Hockey League and after their name change in 1997 in the United Hockey League.

history

The franchise of Chatham Wheels from the Colonial Hockey League in 1994 of Chatham-Kent , Ontario , to Saginaw, Michigan, relocated and renamed Saginaw Wheels. The greatest success in the six years of its existence reached the team in their premiere season 1994/95, when they after third place in the West Division only in the second playoff round at eventual champions Thunder Bay Senators , after they had previously been in round one that Flint Generals took out. In the following season they reached the first playoff round again, but after the first name change in Saginaw LumberKings in 1996, they did not reach the playoffs.

In the 1998/99 season the franchise ran under the name Saginaw Gears in the United Hockey League, as the league was called from 1997. The name was chosen based on a team of the same name that was active in the International Hockey League from 1972 to 1981 . After starting the 1999/2000 season again in Saginaw, they were relocated to Massillon , Ohio , in December 1999 , where they ended the season as Ohio Gears. The franchise was then dissolved.
