The Federal Hockey League ( FHL for short , currently also known as the Federal Prospects Hockey League ( FPHL )) is an ice hockey minor league that was founded in 2009. The nine participants in the league come from the northeastern United States .
history
The Federal Hockey League was founded in 2009 and started playing a year later. The aim of the league is to introduce young players to professional ice hockey and to give experienced players the opportunity to continue playing at professional level. In its inaugural season 2010/11 , the league started with six teams, five of them US - Broome County Barons , Danbury Whalers , New York Aviators , Rome Frenzy and Thousand Islands Privateers - and one - Akwesasne Warriors - from the Canadian province of Ontario . In the premier season of the league, the Akwesasne Warriors prevailed in the finals of the playoffs in four encounters against the New York Aviators and won the Commissioner's Cup, the championship of the Federal Hockey League. Early on, some teams in the newly formed league had financial problems and the Broome County Barons were relocated and given the name Cape Cod Barons. In May 2011, the Rome Frenzy also announced that the team would not return to the FHL next year after they had ceased playing during the previous season.
For the 2011/12 season , the league had announced the addition of three new teams. These were the Danville Dashers , Vermont Wild, and New Jersey Outlaws . In addition, the Cape Cod Barons became the Cape Cod Bluefins and the New York Aviators became the Brooklyn Aviators. After just ten completed games, the Vermont Wild stopped playing on November 25, 2011 with immediate effect. As a replacement, the Delaware Federals were founded, which entered the current season and continued the game schedule, but only played away due to the lack of a home ground. Despite some teething problems, the league managed to increase the number of participants from six to eight. The champions were the new jersey outlaws.
Before the 2012/13 season , the only Canadian team, the Akwesasne Warriors, and the Brooklyn Aviators and Delaware Federals from the United States stopped playing. The New Jersey Outlaws were relocated to Pennsylvania and renamed Williamsport Outlaws. With the inclusion of the Dayton Demonz from Ohio , the league was also expanded further west.
