Ben Hankinson (born May 1, 1969 in Edina , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who was active during his active career for the New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League .
Career
Ben Hankinson began his active career in high school with the Edina Hornets , for whom he was active from 1985 to 1987. He then went from 1987 to 1991 for the ice hockey team of the University of Minnesota in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and scored 135 points in a total of 156 games . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1987 in the sixth round at a total of 107th position by the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League . In the 1991/92 season he was exclusively for their farm team , the Utica Devils , in the American Hockey League and was able to earn a regular place in the team right away. He completed 81 games, scored 37 points and received a total of 188 penalty minutes. In the 1992/93 season , Hankinson made his debut in the NHL and was in four games for the New Jersey Devils in use, in which he scored two hits and was an assist.
In the same season he mostly ran for the Utica Devils in the AHL and was able to almost double his point yield compared to the previous year. He scored 66 points in 80 games, making him the third best scorer for the Utica Devils that season. In the following season, the offensive player in the NHL could not prevail and was in 15 games for the New Jersey Devils in action and scored two points. As a result, Hankinson was mostly active for the Albany River Rats . On March 14, 1995, he was given together with Alexander Semak in an exchange deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning , in return Shawn Chambers and Danton Cole went to the Devils.
Hankinson completed 18 games for the Lightning by the end of the season and scored two points. On August 17, 1995, the attacker and Marc Bergevin were bartered to the Detroit Red Wings . He spent the entire 1995/96 season in the Red Wings farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings , in the American Hockey League, where he was one of the regulars. In the following two seasons he was one season each for the Grand Rapids Griffins and Orlando Solar Bears in the International Hockey League . After that, Hankinson ended his active career.
