The 1997 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship was the first edition of the World Championship in the under-20 age group (U20) by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. It took place between December 22, 1976 and January 2, 1977 in Banská Bystrica and Zvolen in Czechoslovakia .
After there had been a European ice hockey championship for juniors under the age of 19 since 1969 , a junior world championship was held for the first time this year under the direction of the IIHF. Three unofficial world championships had taken place since 1974 .
The tournament was attended by the first six of the 1976 European Under-19 Championship, as well as Canada and the USA. Canada was represented by the winner of the 1976 Memorial Cup , the St. Catharines Fincups , which were reinforced by other players from the Ontario Hockey Association . The eight teams played each against each other in a single round . The Soviet Union team became the first official junior world champion . Poland as the bottom of the table had to qualify for the 1978 World Cup , but waived.
