Risto Siltanen (born October 31, 1958 in Mänttä ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League from 1973 to 1997 for the Edmonton Oilers , Hartford Whalers and Québec Nordiques, among others .
Career
Risto Siltanen began his career as a hockey player in the youth field of Ilves Tampere , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-liiga in the 1976/77 season , scoring ten goals in 36 games and providing seven assists. Because of his achievements, he was then elected to the All-Star Team of the SM-liiga and received the award as the best new professional of the year . Following the following season, the defender was selected in the eleventh round in the eleventh round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft as the 173rd player of the St. Louis Blues , for which he never played. Instead, he signed with the Edmonton Oilers from the World Hockey Association , in which he ended the 1978/79 season after he had started the season with Ilves in the SM-liiga. Even after the dissolution of the WHA and Edmonton's move to the National Hockey League , the Finn stayed with the Alberta team , with whom he competed in the NHL for a total of three years.
On August 19, 1982 Siltanen was given together with the rights to Brent Loney in exchange for Ken Linseman and Don Nachbaur to the Hartford Whalers , for which he was on the ice for four seasons in the NHL before he was close to the end of the trade Deadline in the 1985/86 season for John Anderson to be transferred to the Québec Nordiques . For the Nordiques of the NHL and its farm team Fredericton Express of the American Hockey League was the right shooter as a year on how then to SC Bern of the Swiss National League A . From 1988 to 1996 the former national player stood for four years for his ex-club Ilves Tampere in the SM-liiga, as well as TuTo Turku first in the second-class I divisioona and then also in the SM-liiga on the ice. With Ilves Siltanen failed in the 1989/90 season in the final of the championship playoffs at TPS Turku , while he achieved promotion to the SM-liiga with TuTo Hockey in 1994.
Siltanen ended his career at the age of 38 following the 1996/97 season, in which he played for SC Bietigheim-Bissingen in the third-class 2nd division south and with which he achieved promotion to the 1st division .
International
For Finland , Siltanen took part in the Junior World Championships in 1977 and 1978 , as well as the World Championships in 1977 , 1978 and 1983 .
