The Junior Ice Hockey World Championship in 1978 was the second edition of the World Championship in the under-20 age group (U20) by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. It took place from December 22, 1977 to January 3, 1978 in the Canadian cities of Chicoutimi , Cornwall , Hull , Québec and Montreal .
In contrast to the previous year, Canada competed with a U20 national team, including the only 16-year-old Wayne Gretzky , who was the best striker of the tournament. Nevertheless, the USSR team became junior world champions for the second time . The team from Switzerland was relegated.
mode
Players under 20 years of age (U-20) were allowed. Eight teams took part. Poland as the last of the previous year should play a relegation against Switzerland, but waived. The eight teams were divided into two groups of four each. The two best teams in each group qualified for the championship round. At the request of Canadian television, a final was then held between the first and second placed. The four remaining teams played in the relegation round from a relegated in 1979 newly introduced group B.
