Alf Tommy Samuelsson (born January 12, 1960 in Degerfors ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach . Since 2018 he has been the head coach of the Swedish first division club Skellefteå AIK again .

Career

Tommy Samuelsson began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of Mariestads BoIS . From there he moved to Färjestad BK , for whose professional team he was continuously active in the Elitserien , the highest Swedish league, from 1976 to 1995 . During this period he won the Swedish championship title with the team in 1981, 1986 and 1988 . In 1983, 1987, 1990 and 1991 he failed with the team only in the championship finals. During his time at Färjestad BK he was one of the club's leading players and was awarded the goldpuck as the best Swedish player in the 1985/86 season . After 19 years at FBK, Samuelsson joined the Vienna EV from the Austrian Ice Hockey League for the 1995/96 season . He remained there as a year like then the SC Lucerne in the Swiss National League B . Following the 1997/98 season , in which he was again on the ice for the Vienna EV, the Swede ended his active career.

International

For Sweden , Samuelsson took part in the junior division of the U18 European Junior Championships in 1977 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 1978 , 1979 and 1980 . At the U18 European Championship in 1977 he won the gold medal with his team, at the U20 World Championships he won two bronze and one silver medal.

In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1981 , 1982 , 1983 , 1986 , 1989 and 1990 World Championships , as well as at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and 1988 in Calgary . In addition, he represented Sweden in 1987 at the Canada Cup . At the World Championships in 1981, 1986 and 1990 he won the silver medal with Sweden, at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1988 he won the bronze medal with the team.

Coaching career

From 1999 to 2004 Samuelsson worked as an assistant coach at his home club Färjestad BK. With the team he won the Swedish championship title again in 2002 and was runner-up in 2003 and 2004 respectively. At the same time, he was assistant coach for the Swedish national team between 2002 and 2006. In the 2004/05 season he took over the position of head coach for the first time when he was behind the gang at HC Innsbruck in Austria. He then took over the coaching post at Skellefteå AIK from the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan , with whom he immediately achieved promotion to the Elitserien in 2006. Following this success, he again took over the position of assistant coach at Färjestad BK, where he took over the post of head coach from Roger Melin during the 2007/08 season . In 2009 and 2011 he was again Swedish champion with the FBK.

Between 2011 and 2014 he trained the Vienna Capitals from the multinational EBEL before returning to his home club Färjestad as head coach. There he was in office for another two years. At the beginning of July 2016, Samuelsson was introduced as the new head coach of the German first division club ERC Ingolstadt . In November 2017, he was released after losing seven in a row.
