The 1997/98 season of the Austrian ice hockey league was played following the Alpine league season with the six Austrian representatives of the international competition. Champion was defending champion VEU Feldkirch for the fifth time in a row and for the ninth time in the club's history , who prevailed against the EC KAC in the final .

Participant and mode

The field of participants remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The six teams had previously competed in the Alpine League, which ended on December 6th with the VEU Feldkirch championship. Furthermore, in January, immediately before the state championship, the Vorarlberg team won the European Hockey League , where they beat the Russian team HK Dynamo Moscow 5-3 in the final . The Vorarlbergers had won three titles in a single season and thus consolidated their supremacy in Austrian ice hockey.

The six clubs played against each other four times in the basic round, with the last two rounds shortened by the bankruptcy of Kapfenberger SV, which had not been able to finish the season. A play-off was then played, with all matches being played in best-of-seven mode. The four most successful Austrian clubs in the Alpine League were awarded four, three, two or one bonus points.
