Champion of the Austrian Ice Hockey League 1968/69 was the 12th time in the club's history and for the sixth time in a row the EC KAC .

The seven clubs each played against each other twice. Then the best teams played in a group of four (Playoff A) for the championship title and the remaining three teams (Playoff B) against relegation. All points from the regular season were taken into the play-off round.

Der EC Innsbruck-Pradl qualifizierte sich als Oberliga-Meister somit direkt für die Bundesliga.

Da schon vor einer Entscheidung über eine strafverifizierung des Spiels Salzburg gegen Ehrwald
feststand, dass Ehrwald den Aufstieg in die Bundesliga nicht anstrebt, bestritt der HC Salzburg
die Relegationsspiele gegen den 7. der Bundesliga, den EK Zell am See
